What do you look for in a truck?
« on: July 29, 2016, 02:16:05 pm »
There is still a slight possibility I might buy a truck, if you were buying one (ignoring make and model for the moment), what would you spec?

What are your thoughts on vinyl floors?  I actually like the idea, are they not welcoming in colder weather though?

What about gear ratio, I think the one I spec'd out was 3.3 ish, as I won't be doing a lot of heavy towing. (Although I would get the tow package)

Thinking of the 6.5 bed, to easily carry more than one motorbike.  Don't worry, I don't park downtown.

Leather seats for easier cleanability?  Not sure if this bumps me into beyond budget territory...

What else would you consider either a nice to have, or essential?

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

For me essentials are a locker/limited slip rear end, 3.55 or lower gears, skid plates, spray in boxliner, back up cam(make towing hookup a snap), tow package, vinyl floor is awesome for cleaning, a good stereo, sliding rear window, and I find cloth to be way more comfortable in all situations. I would swap out the tires for something a little more aggressive as my commute takes me on gravel for a few kms every day, which turns to mud when it rains. 6.5 foot box is the way I would go, the 5.5 foot box, friend of mine has one is too small, a crew cab, 8 foot box truck is quite the beast to maneuver. So tow package, the "off road" package, vinyl floor and a good stereo.  Leather will bump you into the really high priced truck bracket, to me its not worth it.
Lighten up Francis.....

Decided on cab first
Flooring really does not make any difference
I like the leather in my truck , for me it worth it , more power option , heated , memory
Back up camera are nice, can always go after market
Is it new or used truck ?
I been driving a pickup since '87

Even the lower end trims now have a back up cam, so that's a no brainer for me too.

Interesting comments on cloth seats, I would assume they get dirty quickly. But leather is outta my price range I think.

Preferably new AB.

Spray in vs drop in bed liner?  Opinions?

The sliding rear window was an expensive option, do I need it for a SuperCrew?  As I would have two large windows I could put down anyway.

Spray in...the drop in ones are the suck. All they do is trap dirt and moisture causing rust under them. The rear window is for hauling long loads of lumber/trim  ;D Cloth seats, I do not have an issue with them getting dirty.

Crew cab for practicality, comfort, and resale value will be your best bet.

Agreed, that's the spec I'm looking for, I just need help with the things that a non-truck person wouldn't know about.  I do think it's hilarious that I'm excited about a vinyl floor! ha ha  :rofl2:

6.5' box is a must for me. I also look at overall length so it can fit in my garage with room to spare. I could care less about a liner. Stuff slides in easier without one. If it gets scratched, who cares. Mine is full of bad scratches and no rust. Can always get one sprayed in later. And also, need four seats minimum and 4x4.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

The only thing to look for is to make sure it's a Chev or GMC ;-)

Thats about the smartest thing I have ever heard you say  ;D The only thing Ford has going for it is that it has a huge cab and that step built into the tailgate

Exactly, old knees!

I'm actually torn between Ford and GMC, but the GMC seems so much more expensive.

Depends on where you drive obviously. ::)    I had a Tundra CrewMax in the underground at the Marriot on Bay (Toronto) when it was essentially full and those front sensors were essential.  :)

Dirt yeah, rust not so much if you Krown it. That said, :censor: slides around super easily with my plastic bed liner. And because it has the ridges it's annoying to clean it out after hauling mulch or sand.  I should really be putting a tarp down before loading the truck.

I am a fan of the sliding rear window.  Open the two front and the rear and the airflow is great.  Not sure how much they are, I likely wouldn't pay a lot for it.

If getting a used one the depreciation of the Supercab might make it a better deal.  If not using it for long hauls the kids will be fine.  That said, suicide doors are massive pain in parking lots.

I think I like the Toyota 4 door cab the best.  Sort of inbetween the two.

I was not sure if you looking new or used
Sliding windows, only had one truck with it was a regular cab without AC , it came in handy
Besides that I see no needed for one
Have you drive a truck and open the windows, in my Chevy extended cab the buffering is so bad it hurts your ears and with auto AC , why open windows

I have a slidin box protector on my truck , it great because I can easily slide my equipment to the front of the truck  :rofl2:

Front sensors are like back up sensors , nice to have but not 100% needed
Big thing to look at is a cover for the bed , I have only had caps , so can not really help you there

Get a truck that uses Apple car play or the  Google   system

All the trucks are great now , I think I would go with a Ram crewcab Big Horn short box with an Ecodiesel
