Going from 17 inch to 16 inch for Winter,need help please
« on: October 02, 2016, 10:08:44 am »
Hi I just bought a 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT GLS Tech with 17 inch wheels. I would like to run 16 inch wheels for the winter, partly because I already have the tires in 16 inch.
I used the calculators and they show I would be within 1.1% of original tire size. Would this cause any issues with speedo, traction control or braking?

original tire= 215/45-17
winter = 205/55-16

Thanks
Kevin

IFAIK anything under a 3% difference when changing wheel diameter is considered OK

Here's a useful calculator

As others have mentioned, you'll be fine.  The only difference you'll notice is your speedo will read slightly higher (about 1 kph faster at 100 kph.

Also make sure that you can use 16 inch wheels. May or not fit over the brakes.

Yep. Are you using Hyundai wheels? Besides the bolt pattern the hub diameter should match or be larger. 67.1mm is what Hyundai uses IIRC

^ this.  My Forester has bigger brakes and the dealer says that a size smaller wheel will not fit as it will not give enough clearance to the front calipers (although some do it, would depend on the way the steel wheel is built, an alloy won't for sure in my case).

Will definitely work.  That's the same setup I've got on my Elantra Touring.  And the Elantra already has 16" rims for the base trim, right?  So fitment shouldn't be a problem (unless the brakes are upsized on the GTS?)

For rims with the proper bolt pattern and fitment, you can check the fitment calculator on tirerack.  Costco is OK too, but rim selection is limited and it's just a PDF document (not a visualizer).

Again, Thanks for all the help. I did purchase new 16 inch  steel rims, with correct bore  and they fit great. My concern , now, is  the hubs are exposed because there is not a cover on the steel wheels like the Alloy Wheels I took off. The rear hubs have dust covers , but the front hubs are open to the nut and sticks out past the center of the rim by about an inch. Is this something I should be concerned about, should they be covered for winter conditions?
