Amazing idea and it looked like you had the makings of a great weekend!

I have to ask:  who won and how did you do with your Special K car?

Part 1 packs a lot of interesting stuff into the story, both on and off the road.

Looking forward to Part 2.

Arthur what kind of sparkplugs were in the K car and what did you replace them with? My father had a few of those cars in the day and they only seemed to run correctly on champion's. I think chrysler even recommended  them not their mopar brand.

It's this image that had me want to go with "Iacocca's Ball Sac" for the name.

Great read! Looks like fun. I'd love to join in next year, already have a car picked out- 1983 New Yorker that I was actually thinking about doing a coast to coast road trip in with my two teenage son's.

Doing such a run in a group would be epic!!

At first I was like this...

You have

Grrrr...

But then, I thought about it, and those hallways were so narrow, you probably couldn't turn it properly sideways if you wanted...so all is forgiven.  ;D Besides, cool trip, cool places, cool you could take your son with you on the adventure - he'll have that in his memory banks for a long time - "can we do this again next year!?" (I bet he's already asked)...so, carry on! Looking fwd to Part III. Hold your ph however you want.

The Top Gear team with the smoke show lol. Reminds me of this 1980 Malibu sedan I had when I was 17, filled the washer fluid reservoir with used oil/varsol mix and directed the hoses to the carb, hit the washer button and huge clouds of smoke would pour out of it's dual exhaust. My pals and I had quite a bit of fun with that mod!

And I love the beater articles!

Looking forward to it!

Your issues climbing hills reminded me of my first owned car:  a 1992 Ford Escort wagon.  A nice enough car for a young family, it had serious issues climbing mountain roads when fully loaded.  I once was going through the White Mountains of New Hampshire while on a family vacation and had the pedal pushed to the floor.  I was still slowing down.

Although, if you did manage to get it up to speed, you couldn't go too fast.  At 120, it would start shake and become rather unstable on the road.  Not the best of road manners to say the least.   :o

In fact, it might make a great entry for next year's challenge, should someone find such a beastie.  To get you in the mood, here is a musical introduction to the car, courtesy of "Shakin' all over":

I got shimmy in the chassis!
I got wobbles in the wheel well.
I got tremors in the tranny!*
Shakin' all over!

*:  Saffy, behave.   :rofl2: :rofl2:
