Ian is full of $hit. It's his baby, maybe he wants it to look like a Jag, but it doesn't. Absolutely no Jaguar design heritage is present at all. It's JAPA, just another premium auto.

For all of the X-Type's ills, it looked like a Jag, and sold pretty well. The issue was lack of development and being kept around beyond its best before date.

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I love the dash and gauges. TFT screens are clearly not a critical factor as shown by BMW and M.-B. doing very well without them. The Cadillac one has mixed reviews and the jerky needle sweep on the Caddies would drive me crazy.

Breaking away from the traditional look is ok for me in this case; I would not want a smaller old XJ design at all. This Jag however will be considered with great interest.

I like the looks of the XE much more than the old X-Type.  My mother had a 2004 X-Type 3.0 and I could have bought it cheap when she had to give up driving a few years ago, but turned it down as our Fusion is a MUCH better car and is $20k less MSRP.  The X looked ok, but was noisey (both road and wind), the ride quality was rough with the 18" sport rims and the interior was tighter than our Fusion.

I hope this sells well!

He's saying that it looks like a modern Jaguar, and it does. It borrows heavily from the XF and XJ. You are literally the only person I've ever heard describe modern Jaguars as generic.

Interior looks awsome in the pictures, but i don't know how that piano black would hold up in real life - dust, fingerprints, etc...

A neighbour around the corner bought the last of the true XJs once he saw the current gen. There are a lot of Jag loyalists that are appalled.

True, but they are a dying breed.

I, for one, like the modern Jag direction.

I think a lot of those "appalled" by the new Jaguar designs are the ones that are looking for that brown diesel manual AWD wagon that sells for 30k...

This and the F pace are going to be very successful. I love the modern interpretation Ian has brought to the brand.  All this talk about the past is garbage.  Funny how it took an Indian co to push Jag to move on.
What's funny is how an Indian company bought over a British company.  Fitting revenge for coming into India and doing what they did.  Lol.

The XJ sells at half the rate it did in 2002. So far the market has met the new style with a big "meh".

If people want a German car, they buy a German car, not a pale imitation with a dodgy reputation.

So distinctive  ::)

It's funny, in photos, the XF always looked fairly plain to me, then after spending time with it, I grew to appreciate how cohesive the design is overall, and how pleasing it is from every angle.  I really like the styling of modern Jaguars.  I really liked the styling of old Jaguars too.  I suspect the current XJ's sales have less to do with its styling than a host of other reasons its competitors are doing so well.  A new S Class doesn't look like a 1980s era S Class, nor does it need to.  I'm sure there are loads of Cadillac DeVille buyers from years-gone-by that deride Caddy's current styling venture.  Doesn't mean it isn't the right move.

I cannot wait to get some seat time in a new XE.  It looks to be exactly what I'd want in a Jaguar (F Type not withstanding  ;D )

The problem I have with the current styling is that it's just "me too" versions of other people's designs. They've even copied the Hofmeister kink into the c-pillar.
For a brand that always went their own way, the new stuff is just so incredibly bland.

I have the same issue with the F-type. It lifted the styling almost completely from the S2000

Compared to previous drop tops:

There is absolutely no way the older cars could ever be confused with any other cars on the road.

I think they should keep design progressing, but for the love of the elder gods, do something distinctive!

And starting with assorted regulations, a windtunnel AND the awkward fact that humans of all shapes and sizes have to be able to get in and out.

Chevrolet managed to have a distinctive car with the Corvette. Cadillacs will never be confused with anything else on the road. It can be done with a bit of imagination and effort.

What is going on with headroom in the back of 4 door cars???

Quoted from review "Despite its small stature – I’m 5’7″ and my head touches the ceiling in the backseat"

Come on the guy is 5'7 for sh$t sake. The CLA is bad. Even the new Chevy Volt is bad! The Volt is a car that is supposed to be a car  sensible / practical people buy. Designers rule and common sense takes a back seat (pun intended).

If I am willing to put up with coupe like comfort in back why would I not drive a coupe. At least you can sit in the back of a 3 series.

My gawd, you're right!  And look at this SLK, it looks exactly the same too!  Damn Mercedes... they should still make all their convertibles look like they used to!
