Good comfortable car for lots of highway driving?
« on: December 20, 2014, 05:53:23 pm »
Hi there,

I'm a sales rep and I drive around 40 thousand kilometers per year.  We're doing car allowances now and so I'm looking for something and was wondering if anyone had certain recommendations to look at.

Honestly the biggest thing I'm looking for as I spend so much time on the road is something that is comfortable and quiet.  I don't want any kind of sport tuned suspension/ultra low profile tires vehicle, I had one before and it handles well and can be fun to drive, but for the most part on our crappy roads it just ends up jarring you around like crazy and making everything rattle whenever you hit the slightest bump.  And good insulation from road noise is nice too, I hate driving in cars where at highway speed you have to turn the music up so loud to hear it.

Reliability is good of course, and AWD would be nice for the snowy climate, but I'm really not sure how big a factor that really ought to be if you get winter tires?  Everyone seems to have a different take on that.

I'd like to spend between 30-40 thousand, preferably at the lower end of that range but I can move up towards 40 if it's worthwhile.

I like the look of the KIA Optima and they have the better warranty, but I had a 2011 Forte before and I just found things felt really cheap on it, lots of things rattled, alignment went out quite quickly, etc.  The new Chrysler 200's look very good as well and you can get them AWD and with that V6 which seems rare on sedans these days. I had a Ford Fusion as a rental a while back which I thought was a really nice ride as well.  I'm reluctant with American cars but maybe the perceptions of poor quality are not justified anymore these days?  But I'd like something I can take care of and drive for a while, not just trade in after a couple years.  If there's some crossover SUV which you think would be a really good option I'd consider those as well.

I appreciate any advice anyone may have, thanks!

VW would be at the top of my list for a quiet, comfortable highway cruiser. Maybe a diesel Passat, or Jetta if you want something a bit smaller. Golf is probably the best of the bunch if you don't mind the hatchback.

Reliability is probably no worse than Ford or Chrysler, but the nice thing about the domestics is that there's a dealer in every small town in case something breaks while you're on the road. VW, not so much.

Prius?     I have no idea how quiet it would be, Airbalancer will know.   But it should leave some gas money over!

I assume this is mostly highway miles. Going to echo the Passat TDI recommendation. This is the perfect situation for such a car.

Buick Lacrosse. Very quiet, Very reliable. AWD available. Lots of dealers. Some incentives. Can easily get $6000-$9000 off models that are 1 year old with under 10,000kms.

Avalon great vehicle as well, less deals, no AWD, and no good used deals.

Live, dammit. You will always have have time to get old enough for a Buick.
On a serious note I will second the Camry Hybrid.

"...something that is comfortable and quiet" You didn't say best possible fuel economy plus you get a car allowance so I'd skip the hybrid option and move the money to creature comforts. A mid-sized that has as many options as you can afford...for added comfort that makes long days in the car a good place to be.

Honda Accord – you could get a loaded 4cyl Accord on the road inc. taxes with your budget...It would be my choice based on needs described
VW Passat
Toyota Camry
Subaru Legacy but only if AWD is a priority
Wild card would be an entry-level car from one of the German lux 3
Max comfy might come from a lightly used Toyota Avalon

Mine is last MY before redesign. It is very quiet, at any highway speed. Everything is comfortable too. I have no regrets so far. If there was a choice or an option, I'd like the suspension to be softer and more disconnected from the road. It reminds me of the 5 series I drove shortly before, while I'd prefer it to be more Lexus LS - like. I'm told the new Genny has a more comfort focused setup.
From the sales job point of view I feel Gen. Sedan maybe a wee too flashy.

As mentioned the Buick Lacrosse, those are super quiet and smooth on the highway. Rented a Taurus once, nice highway cruser as well.

Soft suspension, quietness and reliability? No brainer: 2015 Camry XLE V6.

No to VW Passat because FGC (Facking German Car).

Accord is like the Camry, but with a firmer suspension and better handling (not what you're looking for). I'd give it a try just to see.

Because of the high km:

Toyota Camry LE or XLE
VW Passat TDI
Honda Accord LX, EX-L or Touring

...but for high comfort, low noise and good sounds:

Lexus ES350 (used to slip under 40k$)
Buick Verano
New Impala

...adding awd to the mix:

Ford Taurus (bonus: cop car  ;D)
Traffic engineer/project manager & part time auto journalist

Man, on my drive into Tennessee today, I saw more Tauruses than Fusions. Americans sure love their large sedans.
