accessory belt chirp
« on: October 05, 2015, 05:39:10 pm »
So the TL has had an issue with accessory belt chirping (thats what it sounds like anyway) since we got it. Happens only after a cold start / first start of the day. Goes away after a second or two.

Haven't brought it to the dealer because it would involve leaving the car for overnight, which is rather irritating especially now that the carseat etc. is in it.

Is this something I should get looked at or can I just hold off until it gets louder / more obvious and fixable on the first go?

(Its a bit sad that I am avoiding use of the warranty because it would be annoying to do so).

I'd try checking/adjusting the belt tension.  Can't speak to the Acura, but on all the cars I've owned in the last number of years, it's been a super easy job.  The belt on the Corolla was chirping quite badly (the missus didn't tell me for some time) on cold start up, and when I looked, the alternator/etc belt had a little wear, so I swapped it and set the tension.  Took 10 minutes or so, and problem resolved.  The tension system on both our Toyotas is wonderfully simple and easy to access/use.  The one on the Subaru is okay - buried a bit and the beefiness of the parts is lacking compared to the Toyota, but still a quick job.

Embrace the fact that if it wasn't this "chrip" it would be something else much more diabolical.  Consider it a blessing.  :)

Find out what belt it is and replace it yourself.  Quicker and easier than going to a dealer if this is bothering you.

Stupid question:  Why not just adjust the tensioner to see if that fixes it?

Don't modern cars have automatic tensioners? If so, is there even anything to adjust?

This. (usually).

FWIW, it could actually be the tensioner pulley that squeaks on firsts start up of the day.

Curiously, there was a squeaky belt TSB for MDX and ZDX.  Same engine as the TL.  Wonder if there's a TSB for that?

Maybe the belt is just getting old and is starting to fail - getting glazed and not getting good friction on the pulleys anymore. They don't last forever.

Yep.  And are likely a bit cheap.  I like the Continental Elite belts.

Sure..it's possible. It's just a belt.  Reading up on the TSB for the ZDX and MDX poor belt construction was listed as part of the issue. Read up on Acura TSB 10-035.  Maybe you can glean some info from it.

Maybe it's an interior noise?

It's likely an auto tension system...I am surprised that Jon's Toyota's are not auto-tensioners actually.

I doubt the auto-tension pulley is tired yet, so I guess the belt is getting old, especially if it was an el-cheapo belt to start with. That said, I wouldn't worry much about it at all, if the chirping bug you take a dab (pea sized) of dielectric grease and wipe it on the surface of one of the pulleys....whichever one you can access easiest. I've found that cures 90% of belt squeals...at least for a few months.

Sure it can be.  There was a TSB for POS belts for Acura.  Not likely...but not impossible.
