Audi's small A3 hatchback offered plenty of powertrain selection, but watch for carbon buildup.

2.0T AWD is a nice budget Golf Are. Like the A3, nice and can be very quick with a few mods. Just also have to watch for HPFP issues in the 2.0T, and try to get one with a timing chain after 2008, not the previous service needed timing belt.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

The article is priceless starting guide for used A3 Buyers. It looks like a long listing what and how to avoid if someone decides to own one. Scary German stuff!

Beside the hpfp, the FSI engine eat oil too, my 08 passat 2.0T use about 1L every 1000km.  I don't have problem to check and refill oil every other 2 weeks.  But buying a used with previous running in low oil condition is very possible if the owner are not careful and just stick with the 15000 km oil change interval
I have the latest pcv updated and still consume the same amount of oil.

Problem with some entry level luxury cars that have poorer cousins, is that they barrow many things from the cousin. Is this simply not a glorified version of the VW Jetta/Golf ?

Yep, very useful for potential buyers.  I have no interest in buying a used A3, but if I did, this would be a fantastic resource.  Good job Justin.

That's what I was wondering. While I think a lot of the mechanical components are the same, it's probably the luxury features that change when moving from Golf-A3, such as panoramic sunroof, better stereo, nav unit, etc. If I can recall correctly, used A3 prices often fall pretty close to those of the high-demand GTI, so it may be a 'hidden value' to shop the A3 and get similar performance with more features.

That's how I kind of see the A3...pretty pricy as a new car. Very nice interior though...actually covers a lot of the price gap I think.

So the known problems of this A3 includes, but is not limited to:  electronic gremlins, balky transmission, and direct injection issues.  All from a car model that is less than 10 years old.  Why does "German engineering" continue to get a free pass with such shoddy workmanship?

Because they are supposedly  "Drivers Cars". One must overlook the issues and have a fat wallet. I'll pass
