Shouldn't go to jail...too expensive. How about 32 blows from a baseball bat?

its such a joke anyways... so caught multiple times in the past... didn't ever actually pay any fines... now spends a month in jail?.... whoopdeedoo. he'll be let out with outstanding fines, then will never pay those... in two more years, he'll be back in front of a judge for doing it again.

and the driving instructor... when you drive for a living (don't car if its racing, training or whatever) you should be more aware of the market and people like this.

How about a mandatory audit every year, paid by him, to make sure he's on the up and up.

"Campbell was charged in 2006 after Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) investigators found he routinely purchased vehicles from salvage auctions, conducted repairs and then sold them, posing as a private individual selling a personal vehicle. Many purchasers were not told of the previous damage the vehicles had sustained."

Salvage vehicles are required to pass a structural inspection test before receiving the brand of "rebuilt". How did he get around that?

I believe you need a licensed structural repair person and a licensed facility.  Can't do it in your backyard.
But, if the vehicle didn't have structural damage then it wouldn't be branded and there may be no trace of the repairs.

I am more interested in whether he has been forced to make restitution to the people he ripped off.

A few days in jail might just afford this jerk some training from the pros on how to boost cars in addition to posing as a private vendor.  We could be worse off for this.

Who did he rip off?

The government? I don't know how purchasing from a curbsider is any worse than selling from Joe Schmoe.

Sometimes Joe Schmoe doesn't know any better.  They're not car people, so they have no clue.

This guy knows better.

Except that used car dealers must abide by OMVIC rules and clearly state that they are reselling a vehicle, have a brick and mortar facility and are licensed.
Curbsiders generally don't even flip the ownership to their name, have nothing more than a unmarked phone and have no brick and mortar location. This just for starters.

the people buying from these guys get screwed twice... not only do they buy a crappy car, but being that it was purchased by a non-OMVIC dealer, there is little to no protection for the buyer aside from general contract law.

OMVIC will try hard to get the curbsider in trouble, but won't really help any of the "victims". after all, that's why they even put ads out there telling potential buyers to only buy from OMVIC certified people and businesses.

Sounds like the same justifications that real estate agents use.

true. real estate can be even worse... at least with the cars, these curbsiders have to have enough confidence in the car that they fork out their own money for it and purchase it first... its a gamble. they know that the safest way to get away with it is for the purchaser to never have any problems with the car so they attempt to make it right...

lets see a real estate agent do that for a crappy money pit! as it is now, they have nothing to lose by getting a listing and selling it. their fees are paying staff and advertising...
