If I'm dropping $15K, I'm going to say "Screw adventure touring, give me a Duke 1290R, please!"

X1000

The best buy in adventure bikes I can see is the Honda 500.  Not big on power, but at $7200 with ABS - a really good buy.  The little twin gets decent reviews too.

Totally in the camp of "$15K or more and I get something OUTRAGEOUS!"

I wish I could.  But I just can't.  Not rich like I used to be.  And we very recently had another major lifestyle change in our household.

As far as the 500 goes?  Check out Rally Raid.  They make kits to bring the bike up to full hard core off roader.  Longer travel suspension and new wheels.

How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

I have not been in "shopping mode" for a motorcycle since I rode on 2 wheels everyday, any temperature, everywhere around and beyond between age of 16 to 18... that was long time ago ::) Then, I bought my first car!

Maybe when I'll be retired, I don't known yet but I'm still thinking about it, one day...

I demoed a V-Strom 650 a couple of weekends ago and fell in love with that adventure touring style. It's obviously a top heavy bike but I felt very much at home riding it. I want to try out the NC700X/750X and Versys as well. I wonder if Yamaha is planning an FJ-07? If the FJ-09 is anything like the XSR900, it's too much bike for me.

I might consider the CB500X. I did like the CBR 500R I demoed.

I actually don't mind top heavy bikes at all.

Know the feeling VERY well.  Sheesh, every time I get a big bill for one of the kid's courses or trips, I don't even blink - accustomed to having a lot more income.  Then it hits me, uh, wait, damn it, the bank account isn't always full anymore!  Crap!

There are lots of guys that have owned the Strom and bigger X bikes that switched to the 500x because of it's lighter weight and easier riding off-road capabilities.  Heavy sucks off road.

But if you're never going to use it off road, the Strom is really tough to beat.

I looked at the 500's specs and it's light indeed - many of the adventure bikes are porky.

I like that bike more and more.

I wish KTM would get on and build the 390 Adventure already!

I felt the top heaviness on the very first curve. The weight transfer was abrupt. But then I learned how to be smooth with the turn ins and it was not an issue at all after that. It's no sport bike but I liked how it forced me to ride it smooth.

I may take it on a forest service road once in a rare while to do some exploring but it'll be on the road 95% of the time otherwise. The Stroms are abundant on the used market.

Oh Ron, what do you think of the KTM 990 Adventure R? One of my coworkers finally rode hers to work today. It was a beaut.

The engine is just great!~100RHP with loads of torque.  And with the long travel suspension and right sized wheels it comes with, it can tackle off-road too...which most liter class bikes in the class can't do.

It's quite the nice bike!!

Pretty much the ultimate glass cannon of the 00s. Not nearly as pretty as the 916s that preceded it, but "she do go some."

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I also like the 999 because it's the ugly duckling of the bunch.  But after sitting on one, no way.  It's soooooooooooooooo uncomfortable.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

I actually prefer the smaller engined Ducati's, not a bad price at all...

^ Not bad at all.

I'll realistically end up with something like an ST1300 or FJ, but it's nice to look.

I saw today online an advert for the forthcoming Yamaha MT-10 or FZ-10, whatever you wanna call it. Pretty sweet naked bike. Proceeded to watch a essai comparatif between that and the BMW S1000R (of course, in French)

It's really ugly, however.

The FZ-10 is a love/hate bike. I know some people, mostly the younger crowd, who absolutely love it, and personally I think it's disgusting. It looks better in person, but still not my cup of tea.
