Do you know that there will be millions of household chimneys in Canada...with nothing going up them...in a few years.
There are already a lot.

No I didn't know that,  but why does it matter , we use ours regularly all winter, can't beat a crackling fire and a bottle of wine

Those chimneys need more horsepower.  :rofl2:

With more and more people switching to heat pumps you could be right. :)
I use my chimney as a backup for my heat pump though.

What brought this on?

Well,  modern furnaces exhaust through a hole put in the basement wall...hopefully not onto the neighbors property. The rules and regulations are very skimpy though and it could be impacting your property or windows.
As said there might be nothing going up millions of chimneys except for the water heater flue if gas.

What about Santa?  Don't know is my E63 AMG fits through?   I know it's not up the chimney it's down but still.

Agree both my high efficiency  furnace and water heater vent through the basement wall,  the chimney is only for the fireplaces

And are the flues carried to roof height through a stack outside?

Good. Many merely exhaust at about 3 feet above ground level...sideways; with little or no concern about the smoke drifting up past neighbours windows.  Lots of houses do not have fireplaces...nice to have but not very efficient. So...redundant chimneys and possible neighbor dissatisfaction. Why! Is it an efficiency thing gone crazy or is there a reason.

We built a house a few years ago, and no chimneys. Gas boiler and furnace are both direct vent out the side wall, around 8' off the ground. Also have a couple of gas fireplaces which are direct vent as well.

We've only had minor condensation issues with one of the fireplaces (adjacent window will fog up a bit if the wind is right), but otherwise all is fine. I suppose there's a bit of noise outside from the furnace and boiler, but it doesn't seem excessive to me. The neighbours have never complained, anyway.

How far away is your neighbor's house. Since you built your own I am guessing there is more than the usual distance.

What about if it was more like 7 feet and the flue was impinging on your neighbor's siding or patio.

I retrofitted a gas furnace and this exactly describes where it's exhausted.

But there's no smoke.

For any fresh air intake, it has to be 6 ft from any exhaust by code

How does that sound to you. Flue gasses float around and 6ft is nothing at all.

I still couldn't see it being an issue. Doubt they'd get any condensation on the side of their house from 7' away, but maybe it's possible.

And I'd have to go outside and pay more attention to the noise. From what I remember, it's really not that loud at all. The vents exit on the side maybe 6-8' from our back yard, and it's not something I notice when I'm in the yard. Or maybe I've just gotten used to it, but it certainly doesn't bother me.
