How do you do go though so much data ?

Tablets that are linked to our phones through wireless hotspots.  We basically have highspeed internet anywhere we go.  I also do a lot of music streaming through services such as Spotify when in the car.  Having a high data number just means I really don't have to worry about going over ever.

The current Sasktel plans.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

I pay 35/month for 1GB data and unlimited minutes. Hard to switch to this when comparing to what I pay.

That's a $70-80 plan on Telus here.

You guys are getting hosed.  I pay $140/month taxes in for 2 phones with unlimited Canadawide talk/text and 10GB of data (I use 75% of that per month).

I think you can get MB numbers elsewhere in the country.  My brother in NB got MB numbers for him and his wife through Bell, I think.  They went with MB lines because we apparently have the cheapest rates in the country.  The downside is you have a MB area code and number, but then again, with unlimited Canadawide calling, it's not really an issue.

Good lord that is amazing.

Manitoba Bell BYOD Share Unlimited Nationwide and 10GB = $70/mo

Same thing in Ontario? $140!!!

WTF. Sadly my wife just signed a new contract with Rogers.

Ontario. Where dreams go to die. >:(

My plan is structured such that MY plan is $75/month for the 10GB and unlimited talk/text, then I can share it with extra phones for $50/month each.  Add taxes on top of that.  And that is WITH subsidized high end devices.

MY contract is up in April, and my phone is still going strong, so I'll probably keep it month-to-month until my wife's contract is up in November 2016, then we may shop around for some BYOD plans at Bell, MTS and Rogers.  We'll see what the lowest prices are that I can come up with.

I wonder if the prairies are cheaper because of increased competition?

Here in Manitoba alone, we have the big 4: MTS, Rogers, Bell and TELUS.  Then we have a whole host of the smaller 2nd tier carriers, such as Fido, Wind, Koodo, Virgin etc.

I think MTS and Sasktel help to keep them honest.

Same in Alberta. $140.

It's $80/month with only 1GB of data, which is equivalent to my current plan with Virgin and I pay $45/month.

Crowncorps?

It is pretty bad here in COTU.

My "super awesome secret deal" that took much finangling is worse than off-the-shelf list price from Bell Manitoba.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

MTS used to be a crown corp, but they were privatized in 1996.

We looked at Wind and some other cheaper outfits but they don't have service in the mountains.

What do you mean "don't have service in the mountains"?   You can always roam on the Rogers network when outside of a Wind zone and the rates are pretty reasonable.

Roger's service in the mountains sucks.  We left Rogers out of frustration as their map and actual service area were not even close to each other.

Cellphone prices were very reasonable just a few short years ago.  Back in 2012, it was fairly easy to pay $60 and receive 6 GB of data and Unl'td calling, along with a reasonably priced smartphone.  This was with 3-year contracts.  In those days, it was fairly easy to renew once you had 9 months remaining on your 36-month contract.  I once renewed (in 2011 for an iPhone 4s) with just over 11 months remaining with no penalty!

In 2013, as soon as CRTC forced the mobile companies to only offer 2-year plans the prices have practically doubled.  Government shouldn't have meddled as we are now being hosed.  Lack of competition ain't helping either, though the shareholders are loving it.

I have the old Student 50 plan with 5GB of Data, 500 local minutes, and 10 My Faves.  Given that i've gone BYOD, I get 10% off of the $50 plan.  It's actually cheaper for me to pay $799 for a new phone than to get out of this plan.

Anyone else still on an old but good plans?

Old but Good plan ..yeah don't own a cell phone. I asked a good buddy a while back  wife,he and two teenagers what it cost him ..knocking on heavens door it was nearly $300 a month!!
as an aside have any of your families tallied up what you have spent on "CELLS" in the last 5 years, was it worth it.I'm amazed how many young and old can't sit or walk for 5 minutes without reaching for a FIX  <shrug> :'(
Time is to stop everything happening at once

People were sick of getting locked into three year plans and petitioned the government heavily to have the regulations changed.

I think my subsidized phone iPhone 6 was $100 and a $67/month plan on a two year contract from Sasktel.

The problem is all about the lack of competition. Places like Ontario and Alberta get hosed due to collusion by the few large players. In Saskatchewan, SaskTel does a lot to keep the rates down.

You nailed it.  Though if you/we/us all indirectly own the telecommunications companies by way of CPP.
