Passat. It's got a huge trunk and back seat. The dealers are currently "motivated".  ;D

Ya I brought our car to the dealer last weekend and buddy showed us a 2015 Passat highline that we could probably get for 31k plus gst,  about 4-5 discounted I think.

I never thought I'd end up with a VW let alone a Passat, but I really like it. After two assembly flaws were looked after, it's been trouble free so far.

Looking at your preferences, I'd probably lean you more towards the VW's you listed (Passat or Golf wagon).  Both will offer very good fuel economy, good fit and finish, and the dealer will be motivated to keep you as a customer.

I probably wouldn't go for any Korean product if you plan on putting that many kms on it.  I don't have much confidence in their products over the long term.

Mazda 6 would be interesting as you could get an extended warranty for the 7 years and not have to worry about the kms (as they have unlimited mileage on their warranties).  It's a great car overall, fun to drive (bonus if you get the manual), great fuel economy, and there should be decent deals on them because they haven't been very popular.

If you wanted to go a bit cheaper, have you considered a new Honda Civic.  Reason I say is you can load it up cheaper than a midsize, it'll have more space in the back seats than the Sportwagen you're replacing, offer excellent fuel economy and reliability.

The Golf Wagon with the 1.8T gets pretty impressive fuel economy.  Not that much worse than the Diesel.

That would be my vote if you like the form factor of your current wagon.

I second the Civic suggestion.  It will have more interior space than the Golf (wagon cargo notwithstanding) and will get pretty excellent economy on the highway.  Only caveat is you can't get Nav outside of the Top-of-the-line Touring.  The good news is the Touring can be had for $27 155 + destination/taxes/fees etc, and is the most loaded of any compact car on the market (high end marques notwithstanding).

That being said, if it were my money, I would likely go for the EX-Honda Sensing Sedan for $23 755.  You'll get proximity key, dual zone auto climate control, moonroof, and more importantly adaptive cruise control that will make those 40 000km hwy kms go by easier.  Using Android Auto/Apple Carplay you can bring your phone's nav system up on the car's screen.

The obvious answer to me is another Golf wagon. You can get a nice Comfortline for $30k and the 1.8T gets excellent fuel economy. Or you can save some money and get a Trendline for $25k.

Both the Golf wagon 4-motion and Alltrack 4-motion will be here in Sept/Oct.  Comes with the 1.8T and DSG or 6sp manual.

AllTrack will likely be almost $40k since it only comes loaded. But you should be able to get a base 4motion wagon for under $30k.

What's the point of switching if it's just going to be for another Golf?  Another Golf Wagon or Alltrack will have the same shortcomings as his current model with respect to rear seat space (kids) and the DSG.  A new Golf wagon will also be on the higher end of $20K, approaching $30k, if I'm not mistaken.

Honestly, if you're shopping for another sportwagon, wouldn't it just make more sense to keep your TDi?  Is there any specific reason you're wanting to change?

Another plus to the Civic:  It's comparable in size to my Altima.  And my Altima does just fine as a family vehicle (other than towing needs) with a toddler and a teenager in the back seat.  I have no doubt that the new Civic is the new benchmark for family-sized sedans.  The only reason I'm not running out to buy one right now is I need my next vehicle to be capable of towing at least 2500 lbs.

Guys, the new Sportwagen doesn't come with a DSG, it's a traditional tiptronic transmission.  Replacing his current Sportwagen with the current one he'll gain features his current one lacks, adding a transmission he'll like more, I think it offers marginally more space as well.  The new one coming with AWD I'm not sure if it'll be DSG but the FWD models are only offered with 5 speed manual or 6 speed tiptronic transmission.  That being said it won't offer a whole in the way of rear seat space compared to his current vehicle and that's about the only drawback I see.

There's unknowns with his current wagon, like whether there will be a fix, what the fix entails, and what the future post-fix resale value will be.

If he's guaranteed a certain value for his current car - much more than the fair market value - then getting a new one might make sense.

Yes, go negotiate at a dealer, I got a great deal on the Tiguan, partly due to my TDi.

Could you tell me more about your Tiguan deal?  My wife likes its size and we're considering purchasing one.

Negotiated about $4K off as it's end of life, then got another $2K off due to owning a TDi and coming back to VW.  So overall got a top spec Highline for about $30K, drives great, really nice interior, love it.

Have to agree that the Passat is probably the best choice for your situation.  Better deal because you already have a VW, has a lot of room, great fit & finish, and good fuel economy.

The Mazda6 is obviously a great choice as well.  Haven't had a problem with mine yet (and this is my 2nd).  But this only has 25k.  Not sure how old your kids are.  Mine has 2 front facing car seats in it.  They are comfortable, but older teenagers would want more room.  If it was me, I would go for the Mazda.  Golf wagon was my 2nd choice, but it was more.  And the new gen wasn't out yet.
