Test Drive: 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander GT

In a category full of qualified competitors, the new Mitsubishi Outlander isn't always an obvious choice, yet it does most things well.

This thing is so bulbous and ugly, it actually surprises me that it rings in under 3600 lbs. - about the same as the last generation V6 Rav4. No lightweight, but the looks scream 4000 + lbs. Appearances dictate impressions. A light interior will always feel and appear more spacious than a dark interior, for example. I don't mind a vanilla vehicle that does everything adequate - there's a purpose for them. The Outlander is definitely not vanilla, more like Curry coconut flavour.

Nice review; I appreciate honesty like this.  Too bad that Mitsubishi was not able to make their product stand out a bit more.  From the review it sounds like there is no specific character to the Outlander, for something labeled as "GT" I was expecting to see some comparisons to the Forester XT and the like.  The WAF comment sounds like an accurate summary.  Too bad for Mitsubishi as it has one of the best AWD systems, and they wrap it in this  :shake:

Won't be on my shopping list when we replace the Forester next summer.

There's no way Mitsubishi can survive with all the poor cars they offer currently! I miss the times of the Eclipse, Pajero....Mitsubishi is done in North America.

That front clip competes for ugliest in the automotive world which makes me mad because not long ago Mistu had excellent grill styling.

I too am worried about Mitsubishi. The clock is ticking. Too many bland or poor products. They may go the way of Suzuki soon. I remember the "glory days", in the 70's and 80's, as least in Canada, when they were supplying vehicles to Dodge. I had a 2.6 four cylinder Dodge Raider - one of the first mini-utes; followed it up with a 3.0 six cylinder Raider. Both manual transmissions and both very rugged vehicles in every respect. Almost bought a new early 80's Dodge Ram 50 turbo diesel truck - should have - love to be able to buy one today.

Yup, what he said ^.

Are sure that is a new 3.0L MiVec rather than a reworked version? I'd hate to think they developmed a new engine only to have it be so similar in output and efficiency as the previous gen. This new version also deletes the tail-gate. Those rear lights are terrible; makes it look so droopy. Sorry Mitsu I wouldn't even consider replacing my Outlander with your new one. I think that says a lot about your efforts here.

i don't know about that...from looking at that interior shot, they forgot to install the steering wheel, pedal assembly and gauge cluster...not the best quality control, if you ask me.  :P  ;)

Agreed!  I actually considered the last iteration with the tailgate being my favorite standout feature.  This one is just too hideous for me to consider.

Doesn't look that great looking on the exterior, looks similar (especially the sides) to a Dodge Nitro.

What can I say Fobroader, it's the first thing that came to mind when I saw it.  Maybe it's the arches around the wheels?

I'm with you solstice - I see the resemblance. and that interior looks like they stole it from the last generation Lancer... oh wait, the last generation Lancer is still the this generation Lancer... whoops.
