US Fleet Sales
« on: January 28, 2015, 04:58:54 pm »
I have been frustrated with getting easily accessible fleet information, but I think I finally found a decent [free] source. The numbers from last year are still coming in, so to start off I have year end 2013 numbers

I sorted based on overall rental sales. These tend to be the lowest margin, so kind of critical not to have too many in that column. Military and other government contracts tend to be more lucrative.

These are based on actual registrations, not on sales figures, so bear that in mind.

Really interesting stuff there - but lolz to the Impala - 66% fleet.

Surprised to see some names in there though.

Doesn't surprise me about Nissan.  Little surprised there isn't more Hyundai and Kia.  When I had a rental last winter, seems that's all they had was Kias.  If you wanted a bigger SUV, then it was Chevy's.

I knew a fair number of Camrys show up on rental lots in the US, but I didn't think it was close to that high on the list.

The Impalas sold in 2013 were almost all the Impala Limited (9th generation). Still surprising that over 50k were registered retail sales.

I'm curious about the high number of commercial Fusion sales. I wonder where they end up?

I don't think 15% is a terribly high figure.

If you have a slightly better chance of ending up with a Camry than a 200 or Malibu at the rental counter, it's not exactly great for image.

I am not sure I follow your logic here. Toyota sold 360k Camrys and a small percentage ended up in the fleet. If you look at the 200, most of them were actually fleet sales.

Pointless discussion without 2014 numbers.  :P

Normal Camry numbers are 10% plus or minus.  HOWEVER, due to the UNATTENDED ACCLERATION debacle, Toyota put a stop sale to rentals companies and the 15% represents a catch up.

For the sake of your own health man, give it up!

Terrible for image, but yet the best used car resale on the planet.

There were always two complaints about sending cars to rental fleets, low transaction price and a hit to the car's image.

It's always better to emphasize retail sales, but the image some try to portray is that Toyota doesn't do fleet sales. Obviously that isn't the case at all.

If the purpose of your thread is to somehow infer that Toyota, not only having the best resale in the industry, and earning more than the D3, Honda and Nissan combined, is on the ropes and dependent on US rental fleet sales for survival, ... it's a FAIL.

You are such a sensitive sort. ;D

No. It isn't actually. People like to throw around fleet sales based on what they see at airports and such. I was curious finding some third party information.

Having said that, I'd be more concerned with VW than the D3. And the US market isn't where Toyota's problems lie.

And according to KBB, the brand with the best resale is Subaru. Lexus did win for luxury brand though, which is nice.

I'm curious about the high number of commercial Fusion sales. I wonder where they end up?
Seriously?  They're all over rental lots.  I see way more Fusions than Camrys.

Commercial is a different category from rental.

As Oliver said, commercial is different than rental, and these are US registrations. I don't see as many Camrys on the rental lots here as I have in the US.

Camry
Commercial 8.2k
Government 0.5k
Rental 53k

Fusion
Commercial 39k
Government 5.8k
Rental 43k

It's that commercial number that I'm wondering about. Taxis?

SirO, does this chart inlcude truck sales?  Ford has lots of "commercial" (but not rental sales), you think those are F-series?  But the number still seems sort of low - I would think commercial truck sales would be much higher?

They had trucks on different tables. For the F series I'd expect lots of commercial sales, and that does seem to be the case (~96k out of ~650k total). It was the Fusion in particular, that I can't figure out.
