Need advice for 2011 Hyundai Sonata
« on: April 26, 2015, 10:56:42 am »
Hello, I recently bought a 2011 Hyundai Sonata GL. The car is currently in perfect condition and I really like it. However, I discovered that the 2011 can have serious engine seizing issues. There has been many complaints at carcomplaints dot com.

I am curious if this problem is very common and bound to happen to me? Also, does this affect Sonatas in all countries? I live in Ontario, Canada. The car currently has 55000 km on it. I am trying to decide if I should sell it or keep it.
Thank you

1) It's too late now to do anything about it so no point in worrying.

2) Odds are it won't happen to you.

Doesn't it have a 5 year 100,000 km warranty?  If you're really worried for after that expires, it's cheaper to buy an extended warranty while it is still under warranty, I believe.  Also cheaper under 60,000 km.

Hyudnai sonata is a very comfortable car. I've had it for three years and do not complain. Convenience and good handling are its main advantages :) Regards

Mine was rock solid for 5 years.  And this should be stating the obvious, but researching potential problems with a given model is best done before purchase.

funny on the timing... had a customer buy a car last night because their 2011 sonata seized... it was just over 200kms iirc. it was next door at the kia dealership where they were being told don't bother fixing it...

i guess it must be somewhat common... i hadn't heard it before, but i hadn't been looking it up.

warranty is not a bad idea... otherwise, study up and see if there is any root cause (gunk build up etc.) to see if there is something you can do to help such as oil changes more often or something.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

There are quite a few of them with seized engines...look it up, it appears to be a common issue with these units.

You are in it now.  ;D   Change oil every 6,000 km.  Have your tranny fluid and antifreeze "refreshed".  Drown your anxiety in booze or equivalent when necessary.   :)

Wasn't there a recall to address this issue - something to do with engine debris?

Just make sure the recall was done.

And I agree with Steve - alcohol makes everything better.  ;D
