Value Finder Tool
« on: March 27, 2015, 03:18:53 pm »
Hey all,

The skunkworks department at our parent company have whipped a pretty nifty value tool and they want feedback. We know you guys enjoy giving feedback, so if you so desire please do check it out!

http://www.autos.ca/valuetool/

It values your car based on similar historical listings on autoTRADER.ca. It works best for cars of the last decade, earlier than that and it's not a complete catalogue.

Is it accurate? Do you like it? Let us know! (please)

Value for my car seems plausible. Certainly easy to use.

Well first thing I noticed is there is no Eastern Ontario yet there is Toronto and West and North and Central.

Values are close to what I've seen advertised.  Of course there is no way for trader to know the selling prices which is more important than the asking....

I like it.

Models may need to be more specific though. It doesn't distinguish between a Cooper S and a normal Cooper, for example.

Edit: Actually it does. But it's a bit confusing.

Cool.

A little feedback:

When you roll over the graph bars, it tells you how many vehicles on AutoTrader are in that price bracket (3 between this price an that price).  You should be able to click on the bars, and it takes you to the three vehicle ads it's referencing.  It would help in being able to see the exact cars that are offered at that price point, and how they differ from my own.  That way we'd be able to see why certain cars are priced more than others (more options, lower mileage, better condition, etc.)

I like that my car is worth more than I owe on it.  ;D  It didn't list my precise model, though.  GLS.

Agree with all the other comments about geographical misnomers and functionality.

Interesting that there's not a single 2009 Corolla in Alberta at any mileage.  That's contrary to my findings in the listings.

That's pretty slick boys and girls. Fast and intuitive too. I tried all three of our vehicles and thought the price returns were pretty accurate. I like that it shows the range, I was able to pick the exact model of my pickup, and I liked the buying/selling option.

Way to leverage the value of that Trader database.

$34k for the TL :D

$30k for the GLK

Seems a bit high to me but maybe I'm just a cheap bastard.

Very neat tool though!

These numbers do look high as they are based on asking prices on AT. It would be real interesting if a tool could be based on actual selling prices.

When you go to 'close' out your ad, or delete it, they should ask you what the actual selling price was.  Even if incomplete, it would be some data compiled...

If this was intelligently coded (which I have no reason to doubt), they probably also have stats as to how quickly a vehicle sold (or rather how long it was on the site, or whether or not it was closed before the normal expiry time) which will give some insight.

I've also found these days that there's much less haggling, and prices are pretty consistently reasonable compared to even 5 years ago. The internet has made the whole thing less painful, for me at least. I'm sure there are dealers who embrace the old model, but how long can that last?

This reminds me of the time maybe 6 years ago that some nut in the old Trader decided to include "dealer invoice" as part of the website (free) to anyone browsing around.  Lasted less than a day.
