Based on your situation & needs, I'd say get the Odyssey. It will get you thru the next 4 - 6yrs & then look at a 3 row crossover at that point?

The answer is always.... Cayenne.

Maybe a gently used Macan?
Go for it.

Are your kids old enough to walk yet?  If so, an Odyssey is a no-brainer due to low step height.  Plus, the power-sliding doors are a God-send.

How long are you planning on keeping this vehicle?  Right now, you can lease an '16 Odyssey EX for $410 + tax on a 4-year low km lease.

Go with common sense : Odyssey. A van makes your life so much simpler in the stroller / car seat years. Expect great deals on Oddys this fall as a new gen is around the corner.

Does no one think of the Transit Connect (passenger version) when considering a practical family hauler?

Probably not. I've seen a couple on the road but local dealers don't even stock them.

So would you be selling the GLK?  How has it been the 5 years?  Do you need more room than the GLK?  For me that vehicle is perfect for a family of 4.  Are you doing any towing? Looking at new only?  Budget?
The GLK is my parents car, we are just using it for now while theyre out of the country. They'll be back in spring.

It's been perfectly reliable over the years. Pretty solid car. Actually of all the cars we have had its had the fewest issues.

Budget is implied by the choices listed.... Mid 40 to high 50s plus HST. But really the budget should be specified in depreciation per year over say an 8 year horizon.

Let's say $4000-5000/year over 8 years is the goal.

EDIT: oh, as for the GLK as a family hauler, it's not the best since it is rather on the small side especially in the cargo area. Its quite short at only about 178" and the engine bay is long, and it's RWD based etc.

You can do it but would need two small strollers and it would take up at least 50% of available space even with some of the most compact strollers available. Any road trips for a family of 4 would require a cargo box IMHO.

Flex : I just wish it was updated but it's really long in the tooth. I kind of like it but the wife is unlikely to go for a hearse.

Macan : wtf?

But one orders them, no? I mean, whether it’s in stock is irrelevant.......perhaps a test drive is in order of course but doesn’t mean you have to buy what’s in stock.

Yes but it's a FORD!  Your comparing mainstream vehicle to a more premium vehicle.  I would take the MDX, CX-9, or RX350 any day over an Explorer, or whatever the Lincoln is MKX.  Does your wife care about the 365hp?

I believe the Explorer Platinum comes close if not reaches parity with the MDX. We will find out tomorrow.

So

Odyssey - its huge and super practical. Okay drive and okay power. Wife found it a bit floaty-boaty at higher speeds. Feels dated (and it is). Should be pretty cheap all in.

Pilot - they did not have a 9sp Pilot to get. 3 month wait to get one. Size wasn't bad, can make the interior space work. Incredibly frustrating HMI....no volume knob really? Unlikely to find discounts given the supply/demand situation.

MDX - my wife drove it for about 5 seconds before going "WANT!". Pretty quick, drives really well, but cargo space is compromised especially in the vertical dimension. Is a bit behind the latest in terms of HMI but overall feels like a very nice car. The 2017 is on lots now and she doesn't like the look so if we go this way we'll have to hunt down a 2016 ASAP (which should be heavily discounted)

Explorer Platinum - arguably nicer inside than the MDX. We tested the 2017 with Sync 3 and its very solid. Good HMI all around. Incredible power but weighed down by bulk and an older 6 speed autobox. Very large inside, nearly Odyssey sized. Vastly superior cargo space to the MDX. Pricing is decent with current discounts available and Costco $1k etc.

So probably comes down to the Explorer Platinum vs MDX Elite. The odd thing is that if we want the MDX we'd have to get it done ASAP as otherwise the 2016s will be all gone.

As VMan predicted my wife wants white / beige combo.

These two cars trade blows.

Explorer has more power but the MDX fights back with more gears
Explorer a bit cheaper up front but MDX has Acura resale
Explorer drinks more gas but does it on Regular swill while the MDX is a miser of the finest 91 octane juice
MDX drives better but the Ford has more size
MDX 3rd row access is better but the Ford has more size
Explorer has massaged and air conditioned (not merely ventilated) seats with more adjustments but the MDX seats just feel...more comfy. The Ford seats were kind of too flat I found.
Explorer feels heavier, and it is, but the stopping distances are 20 feet shorter (!!)

For some reason the Explorer just felt much bigger than the MDX. I know it is bigger but it felt like it was a full size bigger (exterior) for some reason.
Might come down to whether or not we can get comfortable in the Explorer's seats. If not then no go and the choice becomes obvious. Only issue in the back of my mind is that several publications have noted the weak braking on the MDX....Honda is not known for good brakes, but 186feet from 70mph is pretty :censor: and a potentially serious safety issue.

I'm going to leave the Odyssey in the game...just in case. Man that thing is like a living room.

Interesting analysis. FYI, braking distance isn't really about brakes, it's about tires, and that can be easily fixed.
