Right...because on a Honda, it's a regular maintenance service item to have it done every 100,000 km too...they just word it differently so Honda owners feel entitled to have (to pay to have) it changed.  Is your sons truck a 5.0 or the 3.5...or the base engine?  Seems strange it would need it done that early unless something was wrong with it in the first place, or is this something that is an unknown need on the newer F150's?  Did they hire a Honda engineer?  Oops!

mmmmm that sounds like a normal maintenance issue at that mileage....your civic will also require one, but I am not sure the engine light will go off to let you know.

Thats a regular maintenance item. You are basically complaining that something like brake pads have to be replaced. Good try on trying to put the Ford down, but not the case.
Lighten up Francis.....

So, is it a belt or a chain?

I've never heard of a chain that needed regular replacement, let alone at only 100k.

Chains should last the life of the engine, but I think what actually fails on the Ford V8's are the tensioners, which screws up the chain. A friend of mine had his F150 engine crater like that about 130,000, wrecked everything.

Most are good but there must be the odd bad one.

WTF, you are writing about time chain need maintenance?
Never heard that

Either has Ford  http://www.fleet.ford.com/partsandservice/maintenance-schedules/ , the mileage is in miles

ITS a chain so no maint. should be needed. 3.5L v6.(as of my 2013 civic, it has a chain as well)..Hoping that will be it for Ford issues but not counting on it..Since my last civic )2002 had 428,000kms on it before I sold it ( only running maint. done it over all those K's) I think my civic will be running long after that Ford is in the Wreckers.. ;D

I've driven Ford most of my life, never done a timing chain on any of them, and I've approached 400,000 km too...sometimes someone lucks out and just gets a shitter.  It can happen to any make or model.  BIL had to have a rebuild on his Tundra less than 30,000 km in. Totally blew for shiit. He still won't buy anything but Toyota... ::) :P

Timing chains will stretch over time and will require replacing.  The benefits of chains is that they usually last a lot longer than belts.  Mercedes used to (not sure of they still do) called for periodic measurement of stretch and replacement when it exceeds a certain amount.  Luckily, most of the engines were also designed for easy chain replacement - actually costing less than most belts.  As I'd driven some of my MBs over 400K, I'd replaced a few chains - and even at the dealer is was only about $200.

Out of warranty it would be 1 or 2 grand I assume, since the engine needs taking out, apart and back. In other words timing belts might be the lesser of two evils.

Good call, if this was the 5.4 they are damn near impossible to change.

I would be very surprised if they removed the engine to do timing chains. We just a set in my shop and the engine didn't have to come out. Problem with Fords is the cheap plastic hydraulic oil tensioner that lets the gasket blow out and then allows the chain to have excessive slop.
Enjoying the Alberta advantage
