Test Drive: 2013 Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG

The G 63 AMG may just well be the most ridiculous truck on the market today, and that is why Social Editor Mike Schlee loves it.

"Fun fact – the heated seat and cooled seat functions can be operated at the same time."

Ahhh, the elusive "luke-warm seat" setting!

This, the RR and GCSRT8 for the next comparo? Can this happen? In the snow?

Great review! There's no logic to support the purchase of something like this, but I want one. Badly. I've not heard the G63, but I'm sure it sounds as amazing as the G55 that snarls its way down our street every day.

I was on the fence as to whether I'm going to purchase this ride, but now that I know the heated and cooled seats can function concurrently, I'm sold. I LOVE details like that. Nice job!

If you begin to submit 100 articles a day, you may make it to purchasing one.

I appreciate the same time heating and colling of the seats. It solves moisture problems - like when you heat your windshield in the winter and at the same time AC is working and that way reducing the moisture. Hondas do this automaticaly. But the vehicle is good for people with big ego and deep pocket!

While I could see why this vehicle would :censor: off the greenies and the proletariat,  I love it. Its such a vehicle of contrasting flavours that if I could, I could talk myself into one. Its big, brash and noisy.....me likey!!!
Lighten up Francis.....

I like the classic design and the two-four analogy.  It's pure image.  My money would be on the Range Rover supercharged - it's got even a better off-road pedigree and similar power and can actually be used off-road if you are so inclined.  It will probably not be as reliable as the Merc, but it's a better daily driver where as this thing would be a daily annoyance to me after the novelty wears off.  But if you can afford it, more power to ya and I wouldn't fault you for wanting one.

I really want one of these one day. Just for the sheer essence of ridiculousness.

Oddly I also get the sense that it is more socially acceptable than a Hummer.

Interesting........a lot of members crapped all over a $65k Harley Davidson pickup complaining about how silly it is, lack of functionality, being a poseur pickup, etc.  But I guess a $150K SUV with all of the same merits is ok because it has a three pointed star on the hood.  Don't get me wrong, I think this is a pretty damn cool SUV.........I just think it's a little funny is all how none of the same comments arise on a vehicle 2.5 times the price.

The HD F150 is a truck in a fancy skirt, this is an SUV with a JATO rocket under the hood.

Like the article said, there is no practicality to a vehicle like this.  I understand the emotion in buying vehicles.  But with this one I don't get it, yes super big engine, sounds great, but having a big engine doesn't do you much if it doesn't handle at all.  Then you say, well thats not the vehicles purpose, but an engine this size is not needed for off-roading.  And it's not just the engine, sporty 20" tires, makes no sense.  So when you are not off-roading, you can't even read on the highway, as the vehicle is so choppy.  So where does this really shine?  If a poll was taken, and you had $150k to spend on a vehicle, this Mercedes would appear less than 1% of the time.

Congratulations. You've successfully concluded that you won't be buying a G63.  ;)

No, sorry, I still can't decide between an A8 or Q7 TDI, I know there only half the price, but maybe I can get the new Boxster, and get 2 vehicles for the price of this one.... When we all win 6/49

I would love to own a G-wagon someday.  I love the look.  As well, sitting in one, I felt I had a commanding view over the road.  Sight lines are incredible compared to anything out there.

Incredibly, my wife adores the look of the G.

Unfortunately, the practical side of me says it wouldn't be much fun as a daily driver (solid axles, etc).

Another Uber-ute I would consider though is the Range Rover Sport.
