eBay isn't a bad place to start - 99%of the models you would find in the $50 range at retail are made in China anyway.  Take a good look at the ones from China, they are most likely the same models sold in toy/hobby shops/Wal-Mart.  Hunt for brands like bBurago and Maisto for relatively moderately priced models.
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

Also Google "online diecast retailers.". The first hit I got was diecastdepot.ca.  There are tonnes of others out there.  Oh - as for you falling apart concern, as a display model I would sorry to much, unless your wife is intending to play with it.

my local costco still has a small section of their diecast up... i think i saw some porsche's but not sure on the models. next time i'm in i'll check... they are pretty darn inexpensive. when i couldn't find another wrangler there, i tried to find them online and couldn't replicate it for even triple the cost. so if there is a red one, i'll grab it... if you want it, i'll ship it.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

I've bought quite a few from Costco over the last few years.  I haven't seen them in my local store yet this year.
