Fat bikes
« on: May 25, 2015, 03:41:54 pm »
I'm thinking on getting a fat electric bike as something different to commute with. Any thoughts? Have not tried a fatty yet, but it seems like fat + electric is a good combo.

36V13AH

Biktrix Juggernaut, $2400 to 3000:

If I were to build another one, it would be a 24-26" bike with a rear wheel hub motor. There are lots of affordable e-bike kits on ebay rated up to 1000W. The main reason for RWD is I'd definitely want a full suspension. And btw, some of those kits come with pedal input sensor, similar to BionX system. For fraction of the cost in the links above you could build a very capable machine.

Thanks. I noticed though that by the time you add a decent sized lithium battery the price gets close to a grand. And an electric fatty is tougher to do yet.
So far I'm leaning to the Juggernaut, the mid drive Bafang motor is highly regarded and the builders are very responsive. Will hopefully go for a look at the Boar at noon.

Seems like a lot of effort, why not get a cheap motorbike instead?

Got one, but don't find it that enjoyable here, too much traffic. Edmonton does have excellent bike trails though. Longboarding to work on them has been hugely fun.

Do you need EV?  I found a fat bike very easy to pedal, not as heavy as I thought.

Are fat bikes more effort to pedal? I need a new commuter bicycle but I wouldn't want an extra effort over a mountain bike as I have a hard hill to ride up and down each day. A hybrid is appealing but a reasonable one is still expensive.

They are slightly more effort, but not as much as you'd think.  If I was only commuting on road I wouldn't get one, better getting a hybrid/niner.

Too far now for me I think, and up and down a big river valley. Not that keen on sweating away and having to shower and change clothes at work. With electric (I understand) I can dial in exactly how much effort I want to put in.

Awesome. It's true Li-ion batteries are not cheap (yet). I've thought of buying cordless drill battery packs and poaching them for cells. A year ago I could get 2x18Vx4Ah Ryobi for $129 CAD, and then while I was thinking the dollar dropped. Oh well...
