Really. ...get rid of a car for a few hundred in parts?!?!?!?

Please  :P    You know it's not a few hundred in parts.  In Ontario with 13% tax the job is $1500.  PPL look at the number and all the other service BS and they unload them.

Guy had it done for $800 at a dealer in Montana. With the states so close to GTA, a good deal isn't far.

I could probably do it myself for $500 in parts and about 4 hours on a Saturday.

Done tons of timing belts over the last 10+ years.  Really is not that difficult.  Twice on transverse V6s, three times on a transverse 4 cylinder, countless times on longitudinal V6s.

My friend in a Washington State Toyota dealer was offering $799 for a bit, but it since went up to $1299.

I just got a reputable independent mechanic to do it for $800 taxes included. No big deal for every 150,000km.

As I mentioned in another thread I got a quote from the dealer for $650 to do timing belt and water pump.

But that is certainly a good possibility for more frequent unloading

My Brother has a 2015 XLE AWD.  Other than the fact that it's massive to park, they are enjoying it.  I haven't asked him much else, but the AWD was the #1 selling feature for him.

Massive compared to what?  Easier than any 3 row SUV, or truck.
He came out of a Rogue...and to him, it's massive.

and their other car is a Mazda3.  He grew up with a 1992 Previa - the Sienna IS massive in comparison.

...so yeah, massive.

Lol.  I went from driving a Protégé to the minivan.  Only took a few weeks of driving for me to get used to it.

I don't get why people sell their car because it needs a timing belt - that's the stupidest financial decision ever.  The depreciation on the new vehicle in the first 5 minutes of ownership is far more than the service.

Because most peoples knowledge of finance can be easily held in a thimble.......also a lot of people see a timing belt not as a maintenance issue but as a failure of design.

Maybe it's just the excuse one needs to make the leap... if they're planning on buying a new vehicle within the next few months anyway, why sink money into more repairs that won't get you any significant return on the sale or trade-in (presuming you are not able to do this work on your own for the cost of parts)...

I suspect that it might not be JUST the timing belt that causes people to ditch their car.

It may also need tires, brakes, shocks, etc.  That can add up really fast.

I would rather put in $1000 into a vehicle I know is solid, rather than buy something that I don't know a thing about.

People would rather spend $30k on a new car that will eventually require costlier maintenance items than put $1k into maintenance items that'll be good for 7 years.

This is why car sales is still a decent line of work to get into.

To the contrary, I think it's perception:

Look at me, I bought a Honda - I expect bulletproof reliability.  People still drive Civics from the 1980s!  They must be indestructible!

...wait, why is my car making weird sounds?  Mechanic?!?!?!  "Sir, you need to replace your timing belt.  It'll be $1,200."  If my 'bulletproof' car is going to have expensive repairs like this, then it must be a lemon or Honda's reliability has dropped.  :censor: it, I want a new car now and want to offload my nightmare of a car before it costs me more!

My parents were like that with our RX400h.  The driver's side mirror motor (one of two - it moves side-to-side, but not up-and-down) is LITERALLY the only issue we have had in 9 years and 90,000mi.  The quote to fix it was $750 and my mother said, "well, sh!t...if that's what it costs to fix things on this car, it's time to get a new one before we start getting MAJOR repair bills!"

Hey, buy a new car if you like - I have many times.  But don't try to tell me that it's a money saving proposition - it's not.
