The Lexus ES 300h is a pleasure to drive, and to fill with gas, because it uses so little of it, and runs on regular grade fuel. Imagine that...

Attractive starter price for a luxury hybrid, but the options (what most people want ) seem a bit outrageous.

Agreed. Those options are desirable or almost a "must" on a luxury car but that brings the price out of my range.
Still, even in base trim it would be just about perfect for my daily commute.

Gotta give it a closer look.

I really don't understand why BMW, Audi and Mercedes don't bring the F30 320d, A4 2.0 TDI and C220 CDI to North America. Sounds like the new ES300 isn't bad, but it's still an insipid, warmed-over Camry with real-world economy that is unlikely to match the 320d in particular. Official figures for the efficient dynamics 320d are combined consumption of 4.1 l/100km and in the UK market it stickers for the equivalent of $37,500 before taxes.

How about:   The AMERICANS would not buy them.  and/or   The engines are not certified for NA  or at the least are not certified in those vehicles.

'Merica loves the hybrid.  Toyota (which many Americans today believe is an American company) has done an AMAZING job of promoting hybrids over diesels.

Great looking car. I wish I owned one. Looks very much like the Flagship LS, a $90-100k car. Personally, I think they slightly overpriced the hybrid. I think it should be about $41-42k instead of $44k considering the V6 base is $40k. It is the same hybrid engine and system as it is in the $27k Camry hybrid although you can say the most comparable Camry hybrid model is the $34,500 XLE. The price difference is roughly $10k.

John, It may be that, but I'd wager it's more that no-one is touting diesels at all (other than VW)..Jack

You're right, but Americans (and Canadians) will pretty much buy anything that is marketed to them properly. VW and Mercedes do incredibly well with diesels, at least in Canada.

I still think BMW made a mistake bringing the E90 335d to North America instead of a lesser-powered but much more economical 320d. Certifying the 320d engine would certainly be worth it since it could be offered in the X1, X3 and even the 5-series, as well as the 3 series.
