Seven years of Corolla ownership
« on: March 30, 2015, 09:50:13 am »
Not much to write about!  And that is the objective of Toyota.

After seven years and 150,000km, I can't imagine a car with lower running costs.  The little 15" wheels mean I can buy some pretty nice tires for not much money.  The fuel economy is outstanding, typically in the low 7's in all city driving and low 5's on the highway.  These numbers are being eclipsed by some newer models, but not many cars can beat it.

There have been a few recalls, most notable might be the accelerator pedal recall - our car hasn't been updated.  Otherwise there has been one for weak trunk springs, a faulty power window switch, and a change to the VVTi cam gear.

In terms of service, it has been oil changes and tires, a transmission fluid change and one set of brakes at 110K.  The car uses a cartridge style oil filter that requires a special tool, and the filter isn't in the easiest spot, but I can DIY an oil/filter at home in less than 30min.  The cabin dust filter and other filters are easy.

Recently, the car required it's first non-routine repair.  The water pump is known weak point, with most people experiencing failure at under 100K, meaning replacement under warranty.  Our lasted until 150K, so I had to foot the bill.  The pump is updated, so I expect the new one might last the life of the car.  If not, no big deal.  The pump was $100 including taxes and shipping and is very easy to change.  I replaced the coolant at the same time.

After quieting the noisy pump, I noticed that the alternator was making a little bit of noise.  Being super picky, I replaced it as well.

The paint has been durable - surprisingly few rock chips for a car driven through Edmonton winter.  It still shines up nicely on the rare occasions it receives some TLC. The interior materials look a little low-rent, but wow, have they held up well.  The hard sections of the console aren't scratched, etc.  It takes some serious washboard to illicit any noise from the interior panels.

This car is uninspiring to drive.  The FWD platform pushes and the gearing is designed for fuel economy. This is truly an automotive appliance in the truest sense.  Which is exactly why we bought it.  Given our experience, the newest Corolla would be the first car we'd consider were it time to replace.

Good write up. I think the other manufacturers are only finally starting to catch up with fuel economy. I was able to do 4.7L/100km Edmonton to Kamloops.

The best defence against rock chips is leaving a 4 second gap in front of you.

150,000km down, 150,000km+ to go.

Sounds like my dad's experience with his, but 4 years (as of this month!) and 80 000 km.

The Fuel Economy comment is spot-on too. When getting the focus I considered how much that would bother me, and it turns out I'm more bothered than I thought, since I always compare to the Corolla. When doing the math, it amounts to <$100/year, so it REALLY shouldn't matter.

Sometimes when I think about it, I wish I gave the new Corolla a look when buying the focus. But then I remember a Corolla would have cost at least $4000 more than I spent on the Focus, which buys a LOT of fuel, and I'd have bought a LE CVT ECO since it's such a good deal compared to the 6 speed manual version (with amazing fuel economy)

Good info. Few surprises expected with the Corolla. I found the Corolla to be a boring as it is reliable. That may not be a bad thing for a commuter car.
I'm currently looking for a Vibe for my son. The Vibe is virtually a Corolla hatch a.k.a. Matrix.

Wondering how your 2001 Subaru Forester has fared ?

Good report. This is an example of a new car purchase that makes good $$ sense.

Given 2 things, 1) Low interest rates, and 2) keeping the car somewhere close to 10-years, I'd wager the economics are pretty good for buying a car like this new.

I wonder how the new Corolla would stack up against this long-term report.

I'd expect the results to be the same. The engine hasn't changed much and Toyota's CVT has been around for a long time....

Water pumps were the weakspot for our 1995 Corolla as well. They only seemed to last 80k or so.

Nice report. No wonder there are so many on the roads.

they need to bring back the wagon in brown   ;D

If they did it might be one of the few cars to get me out of the GTI.

Lol at AD!  For us, the 2 is way too small. We do take the 'Rolla on summer trips and it easily fits four adults and four expedition packs. And we've seen mileage in the 4's while doing it!

We went on a trip where the other family had a Gen 11 Eco CVT model and it consistently recorded economy 1L/100km better than our car - it easily was in the mid 4s.

Thanks for the review. My dad just bought my siblings a 2010 Corolla and they pick it up tomorrow. They're looking forward to years of trouble free motoring.

Ha, and I thought my 'Rolla was 'high' mileage at 66,695km for a 2010!  We've had to replace the front brake pads and lubricate the rears.  Otherwise, nothing other than oil changes (and the unfortunate life that it's lived with chunks of asphalt thrown at its front end and being rear-ended).

For the $, it's been an incredible car, albeit uninspiring.

...with that being said, I recently drove my buddy's (parents'...SHUT UP!) 2011 RX350 and found it FAR less enjoyable to drive (brakes and harsh suspension).  I mean, it's no 1999 996 (thanks, rrocket!) or FIL's new 2001 996 Turbo, but at least the brakes are 'fine' and 'comfortable' (better than the RX and the Forester!).

Honestly, the only issue that I have with it is wandering at highway speeds due to the light-as-:censor: steering.

You thought 66,695 is high mileage  :o

Our 2010 Prius is over 125,000 km , engine and battery was replaced

Isn't the average around 20 000 km a year? In which case you'd expect NoTo's FATHER's Corolla would have roughly 100 000 km to be average

I was joking about my father's being 'high' mileage.

...but you had to replace the battery in your 2010 Prius?!?!

???
That one I'm going to defend - Since I was the one who paid for the replacement of the brake pads/lube the rears, I maintain my "we".

Someday, maybe today, you guys should stop ripping on me for this  >:(
