Storing car - Should I disconnect battery?
« on: December 10, 2012, 12:43:10 pm »
I may be away for 65 to 80 days this winter.

I will store one car in my garage and use trickle charging to maintain battery.

Our other car (2005 Mazda 3) I hope to store inside in a rented parking spot. I really doubt I will have access to a plug to put a trickle charger on it.

Should I disconnect the negative post of the battery???

I will not be away longer than 80 days.

I would, just prevent any kind of drainage on the battery. Wouldnt be a bad idea to throw a bottle of the fuel stabilizer in there either.
Lighten up Francis.....

Disconnecting the battery is no longer recommended. It may power-down the car's electronics requiring a tow to the dealer and reprogramming. Consider using a solar battery trickle charger.

I would take the battery out altogether and not have to worry.

^I also think this might be the best option depending on electronics.
BTW, I leave the battery connected in my 911 over winter (4-5 months) with no ill effects and it usually has enough juice to still start it in the spring, but it has minimal electronics running when off. (analog clock, stereo preset memory)

Dad takes the battery out of his 2008 Mustang for the winter, but I think it varies from car to car. Some people have had issues with the security systems when the battery is re-installed.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.
