This really was a great value vehicle, but once you add on the option packages, the Grand Caravan again became more appealing (unless AWD was a necessity).

Great write-up, Pritch!

if you want a lot of space, and the third row is just something nice to have (but you never plan to really use it), these are a great value.

while i think the 3.6 is just a way better engine, the cost difference is usually quite significant. so much so, that i sometimes will even say go for the 4cyl... all depends on who it is and what they are doing with it...

solid enough vehicles... most people i have sold them to have been very happy. biggest flaws are brakes as mentioned and the kumho tires... not many people like them... not great traction and quick wear.

my thoughts, 2011 or newer... you can find some great deals on new or nearly new that make it a harder sell for a higher km versions.

but they really aren't that bad!! heh...

and if your thought is correct, then hyundai and kia have really screwed up! lots of feature content... but yeah.. at a bit of a price... (not dollar wise, but in other areas).

i sell a tonne of the 5 seater, 4 cylinders for under 20 grand... that's a lot of car for people... and though i don't care for the engine, it is pretty reliable.

Certainly is, however Caravan Canada Value Package is still the MOST car for the people for under 20 grand :-)

Because Consumer Reports don't classify second hand vehicles buying status, I put this one here as "Don't  recommended used buy"...Besides, its cousin Grand Caravan is in the same category IMHO.

Had Kumhos on my first Sonata. Bad, VERY bad, beyond horrible....

We see a relatively high number of these on trade (just because there's a lot of them out there). They are a pretty spectacular example of severe depreciation in an inexpensive vehicle. How many times have I told someone, "Well, if someone can buy a brand new one for less than $20,000, how much do you think they'll pay me for your three year old one?"

Pretty good bargain though for someone that can keep it for a long time.

for sure... even when they work the math, percentage wise, they are pretty much par for the course depreciation wise... just seems to hurt so much more on these low priced ones. definitely one to keep for a long time to get the best bang for your buck (goes for nearly all cars i guess).

i agree for sure that the van for under 20 is a better bargain... but it's amazing how many people just refuse to drive a van, or older people who think they are just too big. who cares that it is standard v6, 6-speed and 7 passenger.

I sell FCA vehicles commercially for a living. I would recommend if purchasing used that someone look at the 2013 model year and later. There was a major brake upgrade late in the 2012 model year which virtually eliminated the warped brake rotor problem of earlier versions. I am not a big fan of the 4 pot versions but they are okay for around town.

there are always a few dealers trying to undercut the next guy... their are multiple ways they do it...

a)left over '15 stock that have been purchased by the dealer at a lower cost... have an in-service date and used car rates, but very good deals.

b)brand new cars they are selling only if financed at higher rates to pick up some reserve. (cash price will be higher)

c)new and they are banking on picking up fees and other things in the box. (many times, these deals are "not approved", or the locates "can't be found" if they don't buy anything)

d)very end of the month and a few deals are needed to hit volume bonuses.

e)just a great deal and hope that they can sell some product, but won't force it... wouldn't bank on this one!!

no problem!  the dealers will say something like, we buy and sell more, so we get a volume bonus!

...umm.. we all buy for the same price, and the volume bonus is equivalent for every store... so basically, most dealers get the same volume bonus... not to mention that most advertised specials doesn't count towards targets.

we have low overhead due to our small store!

... but you staff twice as many people, carry twice the stock, advertise the hell out of it and are in a higher cost area?

uhhh, we do... stuff... cheaper?

.... yep, your pay plan is worse, you do half assed clean ups, and don't train people well... super.

bit of a rant there, but it is one of things customers just believe whatever those guys tell em, and don't think about the reality... very rarely is the "best deal" actually the cheapest transaction cost. you have to be good and patient to get a good deal in those stores... more often than not, they think they bought the car cheaper than anywhere else, but i could go over their bill of sale and show all the discrepancies.

Wife's cousin was looking for a used SUV, really her first "nice" vehicle after owning her first car, a Sunfire, for the past 6 years. Only having ~$6,000 to spend the choices are somewhat limited. Naturally, I got the call to help out.

I got her a 2010 Journey SXT V6 with 140K for $5,800 all in (dealer auction) Was a local trade in and in fantastic shape in and out. It has a ton of features (and storage areas lol) for the money. It's also not a bad driving vehicle at all. All in all these make a great used car value providing they hold up, never did see much online for major drivetrain failures. The old 3.5 V6 has always been a pretty solid engine. She was really looking for a Ford Escape, but at her price point there's no way we would have found one in the same year/mileage/condition as the Journey.

Both of us are happy with the purchase. Hoping it gives her years of reliable service.

good luck with it! i just hated the layout on the dash and the seats... but yeah, the engine did the job fine... no big issues other than fit and finish, fuel economy and those brakes on the cheap models...

good luck!
