My buddies and I are planning a trip to Denver, Colorado and area for 5-6 days in mid-June.

So far our main reason for travelling there is for Rocky Mountain National Park. Going to do some mild-moderate hiking, sightseeing, etc.

Any other suggestions???

There are good road cycling routes there if that is your thing. Of course, the climbs are long and lack oxygen. Also, if you like beer, some good micro breweries.

I am considering a few days in mid-June to spend in the vicinity of Vancouver. It's been over a decade since I was there last. I have a distant cousin there but since he's got a family, will have a lot of free time on my own. The plan is to drive up from Seattle after visiting a friend there.

Ideas ? I'm far more used to the GTA and Québec than the west coast.

Good hiking in the mtns just west of Boulder.   Closer to Denver, you might want to drive almost to the top of Mt Evans (> 14,000 ft elevation) and then a short hike to the top.

If you have the time, and don't mind slow traffic .. the peak-to-peak highway (which will get you from Denver to Estes) will be much more scenic than taking the interstate.  Either way Estes Park will be crowded.

Like Quad said .. lots of cycling (both road and mtb).  Around Boulder its easy to put a route together that goes from Boulder up to the Peak-to-Peak highway (so.. around 3,000 ft of climbing) and then back down .. all on road .. or mix of road and mtb trails (reclaimed rail-beds).

Lots of climbing areas as well.

If you have more time and want to see different scenery .. then you can head southwest to the four-corners area.  Mesa Verde is the obvious tourist spot .. but its one of those places that are world-class even if it is tourist-heavy.

No shortage of things to do in that area over 5-6 days

Please, please, please... if you do this, wait until your body has acclimated to the lack of oxygen.  Or get a local to drive you.

I was in Denver for a two-week training course many years ago, and my boss offered me the company SUV for the weekend.  The day after my arrival, I took off for the mountains on my own.  As soon as I reached 10,000 feet of elevation, my brain began shutting down and I felt like I was going to pass out.  I stopped the car, and tried to calm down and catch my breath.  Nothing worked.  I was able to find the "turnaround" lane to head back down.  As soon as I was below 8,000 feet, I started feeling normal again.  Scariest feeling of my life, especially since transport trucks were zipping by me on the left.

When I told my boss what happened, he said, "Oh, yeah...I guess I should have told you not to do that, so soon after arriving."  >:(  Moron.  The speed of a vehicle doesn't allow your body time to adjust to the increasing lack of oxygen due to elevation gain, unless you've already been there for a couple of days.

:(  Poor pup.  In 2004, our Lab blew out her left ACL.  $2000.  The money was one thing, but watching (and helping) her try to get around was awful.  I cannot imagine double knees!  Positive thoughts to you.

We got him back on Wednesday evening. He is doing very well. He can get up on his own and walk. I use a sling in case he slips, but so far it, he has been good.

Booked my trip to the west coast, mid June. Visiting a friend in Seattle, and then thinking of driving up and spending 2-3 days in Vancouver.

Seriously guys, help me out here. Last time I was in Vancouver, I was so young I barely remember the area. Lodging is seriously expensive; I hope eating out isn't too bad. Areas to stay, see, and experience?

Thanks for the suggestions about my trip to Denver/Rocky Mountain National Park. I booked my tickets on the weekend! June 12-18.

We will def be drinking lots of good beers. My buddies are not really into cycling, but we will def get some good hiking in there.

Now we are deciding on where to stay - Estes Park and Grand Lake seem to come up in Google searches.

Car rentals seem to be expensive as :censor:. We need a minivan since we have total of 6 people, and everything seems to be in the $700-$800 USD range  :o  :o

Do you have a Costco membership?  If so, they have great rental rates.  Also, if you do book thru them, keep checking the rates & if they go down, cancel & re-book at the lower rate.  I did this for our trip out west last summer, ended up cancelling & re-booking 2 days before departure, went from a sedan to a small SUV (upgrade) for $80 less for the week, plus unlimited mileage for the whole week.
