On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

The Golf R is a low volume machine that might not register at all with Subaru.  That said, it does make the STi seem outdated in some ways even though it's brand new.  The hatch body, the nicely finished interior, etc, etc, all make the Scoob look like so-so value now.

Gotta give this round to VW.

Subaru will do nothing.

Unfortunately, knowing Subaru, that's probably true.   :(

It's no more low volume than the STi really. VW isn't limiting production of the new one and in fact it will likely be built in Mexico once that line is set up for AWD.

I don't think Subaru needs to do much if anything though it would be nice if they offered a hatch.

I'm thinking there won't be much a response for awhile mostly due to a lack of resources and Subaru wanting to concentrate on more mainstream (ie profitable) vehicles.

They can afford to bury it for now.  Their sales south of the border are going like gangbusters and they just cleaned up in CR's "Best Of" testing.

Exactly.  Their factories are going flat-out, and Subaru spends among the least on incentives.  The yen is weak and they are profitable.

But I still don't believe that they can't/won't do another performance hatch.  I get that during 2015 WRX development, they focused on developing the CVT and other improvements, and maybe didn't have the resources to do a hatch body style at that time.  But come on, they have a hatch/sedan of the Impreza, and that's a low profit vehicle.  Subaru can't afford to make a WRX hatch now, when they had one for the previous 12 years?

My hunch is they are waiting for the initial 2015 WRX and STI (and Golf R and Focus RS) buzz to fall off, then bring out the hatch (maybe as part of a mid-cycle refresh?) Subaru doesn't really have plant capacity to compete in the hot-hatch marktet now anyway.  But maybe in a couple of years?

Ford and VW have come roaring into the segment - and with some serious hardware!!  Subaru should look hard at that STi concept again.
