I'm with Fob....Trucks are very practical.

I can haul whatever whenever, my 3/4 ton can haul pretty much any old wreck I can coax onto my 20 ft flatdeck trailer, it's 4wd so I don't get stuck, it'll fit six adults AND six mountain bikes AND all our other muddy stuff out back, the 6.0 Vortec and 6 sp auto combo provides plenty of snap and is dead simple and reliable, and its actually a nice highway cruiser....Alberta style!

Yes, its hard on fuel, its cumbersome in the city and parking, and honestly hauls nothing more than air in the box 70% of the time. But I just could not imagine living without a pickup.

I'd be VERY happy with a Colorado/Canyon diesel as a daily, using the 3/4 ton only for the "must do" towing chores.

Its a real shame that the Honda Ridgeline didn't sell as well as it should. It would fit many truck buyer's needs, especially the urban cowboys.

I'd consider a Toyota Sequoia a few years down the road if we needed to tow. The higher tongue weight capacity would also be suitable for mounting a hitch motorcycle carrier.

It all depends on where you live, what you do (work, hobbies) and how you enjoy driving. I'd love a 2wd, regular cab 8' bed quarter-ton truck in a fantasy garage, as a hobby car. Mid-'70s GM probably. Quarter-tons are more comfortable, especially in 2wd thanks to lower unsprung weight.

For where I live, what I do and how I drive, a truck would make my life miserable. My van already makes a farce of most "trucks" picking up stuff at Home Depot. and is easier to fit in underground garages. But downtown...I need the Golf. Even the van would make me stuck waiting for delivery trucks to finish their business down narrow one-way streets.

Rural life? I'd have a car, plus a truck.

Until a few years ago I had a 1980 Dodge pick up.  A "full sized" truck then, trim by today's standards.  I rarely drove it.  I used it only to haul motorcycles, engines, construction materials and other stuff.  It was super handy and I used it quite a bit, but never as a daily driver.

Now that the house is done and I'm not building cars or bikes, I don't need a truck.

I love trucks, they are absolutely one of the most practical vehicles ever. I like having the option of picking up whatever Im buying right now, we've done tons of home renovations and hauling all sorts of material home is awesome and hauling lots of refuse to the dump. My wife likes reconditioning old furniture, easy peasy. We wanted a trailer, having a great 3/4 ton truck, we could actually just trailer shop without really worrying about "oh poop, that has too much tongue weight". Picking up sod, rock or top soil is great, try getting that crap out of your SUV. 4x4 and ground clearance is great, I only hear the people without proper Alberta vehicles whine and moan about snow removal. I don't know, a crew cab, 4x4, well equipped truck is a very sensible daily driver/family car.

Fuel Economy is not much better than a full size. I find it near perfect for urban truck duty. I am considering buying a topper to use for the winter (not hauling dirt bikes). This creates an almost perfect SUV. A huge amount of secure storage room (I can even sleep in the back  if there are  really good powder days.).

I guess if one's laid off, it doesn't matter if it's a truck or a subcompact, that thing is gonna get parked.

I'm with you on this <-- I just don't get trucks.  I mean, I do, for some, but the # of trucks sold simply does not jive with the number of people using them for their intended purposes.

The inherent compromises for the occasional utility seems lost on me.

I fail to see the problem...what's wrong with a number of vehicles sold not dancing with the number of people using them?  Do you have a problem with vehicular dancing?

again, i agree that yeah, a lot of trucks are sold that aren't needed... but it's not the craziness we seem to think...

trucks in canada are at roughly 300,000 sales... passenger cars is 640,000... suvs is 575,000, tack another 75000 for vans....

i don't think that number is as crazy as people make it out to be.

if a truck; held as many people, was the same price, offered the same features and used the same gas as a car, most would say, "well, yeah, then you get a truck" because it can do so much more than just transport you... so it is just a question of what concessions have to be made to make it a better choice. as trucks get better and better in all those categories, it is more valid than ever and getting more so.

... so yeah... come buy a truck off me

My $0.02: being a poncy, paté-smearing urbanite, I’d never been big on pickup trucks. Simply overkill for most people, right?

And then I spent Labour Day weekend riding around with bro-in-law in his Ram quad cab, pictured below. We drove into town for coffee runs. We used it to take out yard debris. We drove it onto the beach. We tailgated the heck out of some local microbrews. We cruised down the local two-laners, arms hanging out, New Country blaring on satellite radio, which was also where I came to the realization that 1) New Country music does have its place, and 2) big pickups are friggin' awesome. I'm definitely a truck guy now - I couldn't have one as an only-car, but I'd love to have one in the fleet.
