Topic: $800 vs $180 - Unbelievable!!

The back window of truck was broken so i went to Mayfield Toyota for a quote.

I thought it won't cost much to replace it but surprise surprise, just the glass itself is $1080 with tax. I thought it's a new truck and the parts are not available in the aftermarket yet but then when I heard the quote on the installation. I was shocked. it's $800 + tax!!! how many hours does it take to replace the glass of the back of the truck? the service lady on the phone told me that the glass guy said it's a labour intensive job so it will be $800 + tax. then I said to myself this is bs. after hanging up the phone, I called another dealer on southside, they gave me a quote for $200. the lady on the phone said it will be $200 top, if it take less time to install it, they will recalculate the bill. then finally i went there and got it done. they gave me an invoice of $180 with tax!!!

so people, shop around when it comes to doing your service. some dealer will charge you an arm and a leg just because they don't think you know.  think I am done with that dealer. i bought my first and second car from them. now the truck. I will never buy anything from them or go there for service anymore.

Why would you go to a dealer for glass repair?  I'd go to a glass place.

This is why I get three quotes for any sales or service from a dealerships. Prices seem to be all over the place.

Also I would the let the dealer service manager know. Sometimes they like/need feedback like this. Often they they don't give a crap.

That's called dealership price.  They will supply OEM glass which is pricey, but they don't even install it.  Usually they send it out so you're paying everyone's markup.

Some dealers offer the option of aftermarket glass.

But this much of a difference can only be interpreted as either they completely screwed up quoting you, or they were totally trying to screw you.

well, on the glass part, think it's all the same ordering from Toyota. heard that canada does not have it, need to order it from japan. The quote difference is on the installation. $800? I wonder how much they are charging per hour for installing the glass.

just telling the fact, nothing to do with which dealer that got it done. the point is the big price differences. so keep in mind that when you are in this kind situation where the dealer is quoting an ridiculous price for a small job, shop around, call another dealer and you will know who's charging you an arm and a leg for the service.

valid argument to shop around pricing, but agree that you are avoiding some pertinent info. as someone in the business, i know i would love it if my customers shared when i go above and beyond.

hence the title. The point is to shop around and the reason i point out Mayfield is to give everybody a heads up when anybody find themselves in the same situation where you don't want to pay a ridiculous amounts for a small service.

Yep.  Odd that he only wants to slam the supposed ripoff dealership but not name the one that gave him such great service and a fantastic price.  And that this represents the sum total of his participation on the forum.
