Long term storage with wheels off
« on: March 31, 2015, 05:08:47 pm »
I plan on storing my car inside a garage for about one year with wheels off, raised on blocks. Will this be damaging to my car? Especially the parts the blocks pushes up against?

Is this for the 2001 Civic in your profile, or the Ferrari 250 GTO you forgot to mention? ;)

Honestly, for the Civic I wouldn't even bother raising it on blocks. But if you do, look in the manual for the jacking points and put your supports there.

It's the Civic, going to drive the Ferrari for a while instead  :rofl2:
I'm trying to prevent theft by removing the wheels, security is shady in my condo parking

In that case, yeah, just buy 4 good jackstands and put them under your jacking points. You will need a bigger jack than your stock one for height.

According to my mechanic friends you actually want the suspension loaded for long term storage, having it hanging leaves bits in the wrong position and you could have rusty shock shafts and screwy bushings when you put it back on it's wheels.

I'd just pump up the tires to max and leave it sitting.

As blur noted, standard storage procedures today are to keep the car on it's suspension.

Take the battery out. Any concern about rodents?  Block the tailpipe and any other possible entrances. Fill the tank to the brim and if you want put in some stabilizer. I'd also change the oil and filter so there's some nice high quality synth in there when it's time to fire her up. Wax the paint and alloy wheels.

Will you have to pay for parking over the year?  If so, why not sell it then get something new (to you) when you get back?

But none of that is going to prevent theft.

And it's its. :)

Fack me, I am so aware of Apple Autocorect! And I've had it "correct" perfectly good words and change them into useless gibberish. WTF is up with that? But then I'll turn it off and that's even worse. >:(
