These are nice SUV's, but a timing belt, really? So if you plan on buying a used MDX, add $1,000 to the price unless you've got paperwork of a recent timing belt change.

My coworker owns a 2008 and has had many more issues, some of which appear to be common.  Vehicle drives great and currently has 120000kms.  He is glad that he has extended warranty:

1. Timing Belt tensioner has died twice.  Thankfully it was audible before total catastrophic failure.  Apparently, it is very common.
2. Steering gearbox had to be replaced twice.
3. Engine rear main seal had to be replaced because it was leaking.
4. Leaky fuel injectors.  The symptom was the car needed a little extra crank sometimes.  In doing so, it made a very weird noise.
5. Front wheel bearings.  Apparently very common for them to fail at low mileage.
6. If you have the battery replaced at the dealer, be careful.  Honda/Acura OEM batteries seem to be prone to intermittent cells.  The symptom is you're driving along and the car suddenly stumbles, or quits (no power on dash or engine).  Contrary to popular belief and even what the techs will tell you, the alternator will not pick up the load.  Why?  The alternator generates fairly noisy, dirty power with voltage spikes.  The battery, being a capacitor acts like a low pass filter and regulates the power.  When the battery quits, the alternator puts out spikes.  This can damage the electronics.  Most manufacturers have put safeties in their electronics that will shutdown when this condition occurs.  The techs could not diagnose this and I had to tell my buddy to fork out some cash, put in a battery and prove it to them.  He did.  Needless to say, they reimbursed him.
7. Lot's of little squeaks and rattles since almost brand new.  Very annoying in vehicle of this price point.
8. Seal on rear diff had to be replaced because it was leaking.
9. Rear shocks gave out around 80-90k kms.  Expensive because they are the adaptive ones.

All this in 5 years of ownership and 120000kms.

I can tell you my Mazda is more reliable despite being a rust bucket in almost 10 years and 325000kms of ownership.

We have had our 2009 MDX with Tech Package with 57,000 km for 4 years and the only problem we have ever had was 3 years ago when the power tailgate was replaced under warranty. Other than that, we have had absolutely no problems........it always starts on the first crank and it has been bulletproof. Gas mileage is as expected and not very good though, we are averaging about 15L per 100 km with about 50% city and 50% highway driving.

It's a massive "performance oriented" SUV with a large V6...WTF do people expect?

I think theres a lot of idiots who compare mid size CUVs to the compact ones when it comes to fuel economy.

I agree the MDX is a big vehicle and you pay at the gas pump.......the option to carry 7 people is great though and worth the gas penalty for the occassional time we have to carry the grandparents or the kids friends or if we want to carry a big load from the nursery.

Word to the wise...save yourself anymore worry about freakin timing belts and buy a used vehicle that uses timing chains instead. Keep $1000+ maintenance fee every 100,000 kms in your pockets.

15L/100Km is pretty thirsty, especially considering it's premium fuel.

There's no way I'd let $1000 every 100K km affect my purchase decision on a vehicle I want.  Minor IMO.  I don't have any vehicles with timing belts right now, but I've had a few.  Last timing belt I paid for was at a dealer. Total cost was $450.  YMMV.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Yeah, its not great mileage, but the MDX is a big beastie with a hard working V6.

Compared to fuel, insurance and depreciation, a timing belt replacement every 160K (MDX's interval) is chump change.  If that alone keeps someone from buying one, then they weren't in the market for a luxury SUV anyway.

We saw the MDX/RX/Pilot/Highlanders disappear from our neighbourhood a while back with the ML/X5 models storming in.  Today, most of the Germans are gone again and the MDX/RX once again have taken over.

Even Honda builds a lemon now and then.  Our Acura was the worst vehicle we've ever owned, but I still recommend Honda/Acura to those that ask.  The odds are in your favour that you won't get a lemon from them...

I think a newer MDX would be a very good choice...seems like a lot of vehicle for the price. And I think Honda products generally age well.

IMO, the MDX is still one of the best looking mid-sized SUV's in its segment. The design has aged well.

Yup, my wife's 2010 has been great. We really dig the changes that were made to the MDX in 2010...including the 6 speed auto which undoubtedly helps fuel economy (we don't care but this forum is full of misers).

Apparently I'm going to be the resident forum Acura slappy  :P

Do you realize that in about 30 (updated as requested) years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos?
