Crew cab, 4x4, 6.5 foot box, 3/4 ton and up

That is a MASSIVE truck.

I am a fan of the extended cab and 6.5 foot bed.  I like having the length for hauling lumber and people can sit in the back if needed (or kids as long as you need them to) and it isn't too onerous in a parking lot.

IMO, if it isn't your primary family vehicle the 5.5 bed is too limiting for regular truck us
e.

I will also lend my truck out to friends with no reservations.  In fact, if I don't have to go then I am guaranteed to not be lifting things.

I agree, ext cab with 6.5 box is the best compromise (now that my kids are grown).

Don't so much agree with lending out my truck though. :)

So would you get a Crew cab if you had young kids? Or only if it was the main family vehicle?

Crew cab is the only way to fly if you have to go anywhere with a few buddies or the family.

I currently have two young kids (3 &5) and still prefer the extended cab for my needs.  But I rarely take it on long drives and don't drive it daily, maybe 10k km/yr.   Rear facing is a different story.

If you are regularly using it for family vacations crew cab all the way.

Had 3 different crew cabs when the kids were small but the trucks were 3/4 ton so the boxes were 6.5 also. Made for a foot and half longer wheel base as I recall.

Funny this. Where buddies are concerned I follow the two guys per truck rule...mostly for hunting and snowmobiling. The folded up rear seat in an ext cab is perfect for two guys' gear.

Still my favourite format:

8ft bed, regular cab, maybe 4x4, maybe not. Enough cab room for myself and a buddy. Anyone else wants to come along, they can follow in their own ride.  ;D

I really like this setup, only problem, horrible for getting groceries or any other smaller objects....I want room behind the front seats.

I agree. I want the space inside to keep gear warm and safe. But that's a real truck. ^

Interesting how the first truck has no chrome bumper, but chrome mirrors.  2nd truck has chrome bumper, but plastic mirrors, and door handles.

When I was young, not many people had trucks as their primary vehicle.  We didn't.  Our truck was a cheap utility vehicle that could seat three if needed but was all about hauling stuff.  Motorcycles, Chev small blocks, lumber, drywall, furniture, a table saw, and so on.  Haul a load to the dump?  Of course!  Leather interior?  Are you nucking futs?  A "Mexican blanket" seat-cover and rubber floor mats were "fancy."  We will be getting in after dragging a moose kill and our boots will be more mud than boots!

We drove tree stump through the driver's rear wheel well once on a hunting trip.  Welded it up when we got home.  No way anyone would have taken some fancy-pants $60+K truck where we went and you'd have cried when you saw that tree poking into the box.  Meh, fixed it up and she was ready for the next job.

Meh, I'm happy letting friends borrow our truck.  That's one favour in the bank!

But then again, our truck is used for, you know, actual truckly duties!  So if a buddy wants to borrow it to move some furniture, or head to the landfill, or pick up some gravel - that's what it's meant for.  If it was a 60K cowboy cadillac with a pristine interior, maybe I'd have a different opinion.

Thats why I resist the idea of getting a Cowboy Cadillac.....I like using the truck for what its for, dents, scratches, whatever.

If you were to buy a truck for using like a truck, how old and what format?  3-5yr old, single cab long bed?

More like 12 years old, regular cab, 8-foot box, 4x4.    At least that's what I do.  Hauled a load of brush with it and then picked up some fencing today, didn't care if I scratched it. Had a ton of wood pellets in it a few months ago.  My little girl sheltie loves riding in it.

Did you know you had to get a dog if you get a pickup?

That's a great recollection. I grew up in Northern Ontario where trucks made sense for the rural road conditions and the fact that lots of people towed/hauled stuff. Most of the trucks were either regular or extended cab, usually 5-10 years old with lots of wear and tear. These weren't highway haulers to move your cabin cruiser, they were getting muddy, overloaded, broken, repaired, repeat. Once mom and dad were done with it, the kids started driving it around.

Half of my shelties hated car/truck rides an half loved it.
My boy is not crazy about them, but at least he's stopped throwing up and drooling.   The little girl always has her head out the truck window going "woo-hoo"

One sheltie didn't enjoy rides at all until we got the Subaru in which the back seats folded flat, then she could lay down and still see out of it and she decided she liked that car.

Total stranger approached me in a parking lot yesterday.  She saw my truck and asked if I would accompany her to pick up and deliver a new couch to her house.  Made me think of this thread.

So, what did she look like?

You knew we were going to ask.

Sounds like the premise of a porn movie.
