Test Drive: 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350

The Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 isn't cheap, but it does everything it sets out to do, and does it well.

In before the 'this is not a real MB' comments start.  ;D

I've always loved the look of these and would consider it if I was getting a premium CUV. Since its only the two of us the small space isn't even a concern. I actually think it slightly bigger than our GTi.

The 2013 update included some cosmetic changes, an update to powertrain and interior technology, but nothing as dramatic as Mercedes-Benz bringing diesel power to this niche in the forthcoming GLK 250 Bluetec—we can’t wait for that combination of efficiency and grunt.

Will be waiting to see how the diesel performs as that would be my choice for a power plant.

If going by the number of these I see around TO they must be selling well.

I like the squared off look of these as well. In fact, I'd prefer it if the ML was just a larger version in terms of styling. I also see lots of these around town. Attractive leasing programs?

The only negative I see is that I've always felt that they are just a bit too small for their class. Once you move into the mid 50K range you've got to think pretty seriously about a VW Touareg or a nicely dressed RX350 giving you quite a bit more vehicle for the money. I guess it all comes down to how small you want to go. :-\

To these eyes it's a good looker, in and out. The cargo looks bigger than 450L but probably because the floor is so high. Still not a lot of room back there.

I like the squared off look of these as well.

Me, too! The GLK and the VW Tiguan are the best lookers because of their boxy shape and properly shaped D-pillars.

Never liked the first design, but I like the new design.  I think a lot of GLKs are on the road because they had very good incentives on 2012s when the redesigned 2013s came out.  A friend of mine got one to replace his wife's B200.
I think the car costs too much for the size, though.  You can get a lot more car for that kind of $$$.

I like the box shape of this vehicle, if I want tapered I'd get a typical car by today's design standards.

I admit that I stopped paying much attention after reading the lack of space in the vehicle. My wife really likes it, but at 6'1 I need my space.

If this was a little longer and with the upcoming diesel, it would fit all our house needs.

I'll wait for the diesel version review.
The size is no issue for me, the rear seat would rarely see any occupants, and for cargo duties I have a minivan.

I was told by a dealer that the 250 GLK Bluetec won't be available until April. No pricing but they will take an order. I was "told" the first ones are all spoken for and to order if I wanted one. I have heard this all before from a dealer so I'll wait for pricing and a real drive in both versions. It all boils down to the diesel premium required over the similarly equipped gas GLK. Of course tow ratings may be different also if that is a concern.

Been driven around in these a few times and I'm surprised at how nice the basic model is – doesn't seem entry level at all...causes me to think it's pretty good value at the starting price point...if you want a CUV.

The Lexus RX rules the road in my neighbourhood thanks to a bunch of X5s that soured a lot of folks on FGSUVs and sent them scurrying to the Lexus dealer.  I much prefer the creased edges of the GLK and think it's the best looker in the category.  I also think the RWD biased 4-matic is pretty sweet.  Would it be possible to swap the Lexus electrical system into a GLK?   ;D

As for cargo space, yeah, too small for me.  And the brand image is now all wrong for me too.  I'm now the silly hippy/climber/runner/teacher that used to have nice things...

Thanks for the info about the Bluetec.  That may well be my next vehicle.  And I bet it will not show much of a premium - like everywhere else across the lineup where diesel is offered, Mercedes doesn't really increase the price...in fact it's often their cheapest option which I like...

I really like the look of these things.

The updated interior + exterior are very nice...the pre-refresh GLK is rather austere inside (...door panel is textured plastic...). Those vents are sort of gaudy though.

I think they've managed to eke out some lower drag coefficient too. This thing sucks gas.

I think the refresh makes the car a more rational choice (fuel econ, and I think better option packaging). Its still not very big though.

If you order one... please make sure you get the (faux?) wood trim. That aluminum is awful.

I loved that aluminum... I want to get a fridge like that! ;D
