According to its CEO Carlos Ghosn, Nissan is putting the final touches on batteries that will double the range of its Leaf EV. A release of the technology, which would be a long sought breakthrough, is said to be only a few years away.

In a late night interview at Tokyo’s Business News channel, a relentless host pressed Carlos Ghosn for answers about the future of Nissan’s electric vehicle program. Is Nissan working on new batteries? Ghosn: “Yes.” Can you tell us more? Ghosn: “No.” Will the range double? Ghosn: “Yes.” That means more than 400 km? Ghosn: “Yes.”

Engineering sources in Japan confirm that battery research has seen intense attention at major OEMs, notably Nissan, but also at Toyota, which in public plays the BEV skeptic. “Commercial applications could be no more than one model cycle away,” said an engineer who is not supposed to talk to me. According to the source, the new battery delivers twice the capacity while weighing – and costing – less than the current shorter range model. In a prototype, Nissan’s Barcelona Technical Centre last year tested a 48 kWh battery, double the capacity of the Leaf’s 24kWh battery.

Is it me or quite a few extended EVs range have promised lately to come into the next 3 years or so?

On Japanese test cycle. Although no timeline was mentioned, in context it seems he was talking about the next generation Leaf which is a few years away.

The other one that comes to mind is VW, with even more substantial claims. I posted it somewhere here. I suppose battery technology matures regardless of anyone wishes or hopes. Panasonic, LG and other giants are investing big dough in R&D. So, similarly to H2 vehicles, EV2.0 will appear around the same time and at a similar price. From what I read that price will be similar to the current mass market EVs but the battery capacity will double. Kind of like with hard drives.

I'm excited for this.

I could conceivably be looking at an EV in three years time.  We'll be looking at either replacing the Altima (with something nicer) or potentially adding a second vehicle to our household.  If we add a second vehicle, there is no reason why it couldn't be an EV.  Let the improvements come forth.

Old news, but it's news to me so I will share:

Why does it have a grill?

Great point.  Styling convention, probably.  I don't think the original Leaf had a grill, did it?

^^^ It doesn't make it look more aerodynamic, does it? Maybe an attempt to make it look more conventional, but anyhow the pic is likely of an early concept. IMO they need to make the Leaf look more sporty and yet stand out from the rest of the lineup, kind of like Toyota made Prius recognizable as an ultimate "planet saving" car.

They should certainly make it a whole lot more aerodynamic than it currently looks.  Adding perforations into the front clip goes against aerodynamics.  Ask any high speed racer at Mohave why they're duct taping all the openings on their car.

Some exciting rumours and speculations these are but let's face it it's inevitable for mainstream EVs to grow in battery size. The question is when. I think once the cell suppliers are ready that is when Nissan will offer an extended range battery option, for the existing Leaf.

A decent bump in kWh for the current, 1st generation Leaf:
http://insideevs.com/2016-nissan-leaf-get-25-larger-battery/

From the looks of it, since they haven't re-designed the car and it's battery pack dimensions, this 25% increase should come from the new chemistry cells.

Yep. Bolt or Leaf?; the race to 200 miles on a charge is on. Watch from 39 min mark:

Nissan could come out on top in terms of the car dimensions though.

Yes, good meme. 200 mpc is the tipping point IMO, for both, the mass EV adoption and redundancy of the range extender. It would be awesome if the battery is not much heavier than the current one.

No.  Price is the tipping point.  I really appreciate the technology.  The price?  Not so much.
