Pretty sure the van has the original fuel filter.  Don't remember seeing in the service records from previous owners.  220k now...

Do all cars have limp mode?
It's more of a diesel thing to frequently change the fuel filter.

I never once changed it in my Protégé, 340k later.

I'm no expert on automotive diesels but  my experience with marine diesels is that you always carry spare filters.

So owning  MB is like owning a sailboat , hand over credit card,  hold back the tears , :rofl2:

Just got a call....it was a partly clogged fuel filter  ....must be that great quality diesel Mr Irving refines here  ;D

Really....huh....only time I have seen this is when someone buys a car thats been sitting for a really long time and the tank has a bunch of crap on the bottom. Weird  ??? ???

This can happen if the level in the fuel station tank is very low, or if you fuel up while the tank is being recharged and the crap in the bottom of the tank is being disturbed.

Best thing with diesel, is to go to a fuelling station where the tank is being turned over frequently so the fuel is fresh.  And if you see the fuelling truck there, come back a day later to fuel up.

I hope I'm not tempting the Gods but no issues since the fuel filter in March and I suspect that was really more of a fuel quality issue.  I had occasion to drive to Boston a couple of times this month (once a same day return). That's right around 1250 kms round trip. In spite of the issues I've had the ML is still a great long distance cruiser and makes trips like that much less fatiguing . It will be 5 years old next month so I have 1 year and about 36000kms left in coverage.  At this point I don't see any point in doing anything about a replacement until then.

Nice.  Here's to some more trouble free motoring.

I would almost insist that the fuel filter is changed every second service.  Certainly can't hurt IMO.

Our local MB Indy recommends that every 30k - 45k kms, you change the fuel filter on diesel equipped models.  Cheaper than being stuck on the side of the road and certainly cheaper than replacing injectors.

Yeah, service schedule calls for every 45K for the ML. That one clogged at about 40K. I have to think I must have gotten some bad fuel somewhere along the line.

So, just dropped the car off so they would be able to check for cold start noise in the AM. First time getting an E class as a service loaner (2016 E250 Bluetec)...very nice car with decent power even in the default "eco" mode. The seat with massage function and "Dynamic Contour" (side bolsters that can be set to inflate automatically on corners) is kind of cool.

Cool until you have to pay for the repair! ;D
If those features were on a Lexus or Infiniti I would not worry about them. But, on a FGC..it spells disaster.

Do you realize that in about 30 (updated as requested) years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos?

Oh, I know. Only way I would ever consider another MB would be if a 6/160 warranty was part of the deal.

When you go back to pick up your car ask them where is that diesel C-class wagon they said we would get.
