Nail through sidewall
« on: March 24, 2015, 01:15:20 pm »
Funny how we were just talking about nails in tires in another thread, and a day later I get this:

It's on an ST (trailer) tire, Load Range D. Found the nail at a gas stop and pulled it out. Aside from the two holes in the rubber where the nail went through, the tire appears undamaged and isn't leaking any air.

I suppose the sidewall plies could have been scuffed up a bit and maybe weakened, but I'm regularly checking for blisters or bubbles, and so far everything looks fine. Gas stops are every 350-400 kms, so it gets checked often.

It's been a week now and over 1,500 kms of highway travel since it happened, and tire still looks fine and hasn't lost any air.

I like how it went through the words "Serious injury may result from"

Yeah, but I'm all good because it doesn't say "Serious injury may result from ... large, rusty, spiral-shanked nails sticking through the sidewall."  :rofl2:

If the tire blows up, that will be my defense. :)
