What is this and should I be concerned?
« on: July 23, 2016, 10:50:39 am »
My car has been sitting for over a week and today when I re-parked it I noticed the following fall out from the front left wheel
Does anyone know what this is and if I should be concerned? I drove the car back and forth and hit the breaks multiple times and everything seems to be good.

Thanks!

Can you still see a brake rotor?  :o

I'd get that vehicle up on a hoist and a good mechanic underneath A.S.A.P.!   Get it fixed.

I would say you have a serious brake issue. Get the wheels off and inspect ASAP before you even think about driving anywhere

Could just be the dust shield has rusted away and fallen off. No biggie if that's the case, but you definitely need to find out what's going on for certain. Take off the wheel and have a proper look.

was going to say dust shield...

front wheels though eh?... hmmm... get it looked at. brakes will still work at low speeds even without much actually there, so be careful.

likely though, the shield just behind the rotors... when the wheel is cold, reach behind (if you can through your rims) and feel for a thin piece of metal back there at about the same dimensions of the rotor itself. if it's not there or feels jagged and broken, that would be it. not an integral part, but if that's gone, might be worth making sure nothing else has rotten away... (be careful not to cut yourself!)

Jacked up the car. Looks like the back of the rotor rusted off a bit. This part is not used or touched by the break so I think im good. Phew :)
You can see in this image where it fell off from (the bottom rusted looking area)

Yeah, that's a pretty good chunk of the swept area missing from that rotor.

yeah, get new brakes. if the discrepancy between the wear path and the rim is that thick, you have worn a good chunk off.

I can see the rubbed surface but can't determine where the disc thickness ends...it's a whole pile of rust ready to drop by the look of it.
