Looking for a long term car rental in GTA
« on: May 10, 2008, 07:31:01 pm »
Hi. Can you guys suggest a good car rental company to check out? Basically I'm looking for economy transportation with AC and a slushy box. I can pay by Visa (I hope they will cover insurance) up front for 3 months or so. What should a good price be like?
Any suggestion appreciated  :)

You want to rent a car for three months? Maybe Leasebusters?

I worked for a place that rented a vehicle by the month from a local car rental place (it was a National Car Rental agent). It wasn't cheap but insurance was covered.

Try calling a rental company with a local agent.

I would double-check the fine print on your Visa for the insurance coverage.  I would be surprised if they didn't have some language about the length of the rental period.

By the way, why is this not in the Car Talk forum?

"By the way, why is this not in the Car Talk forum?" - no idea, I wouldnt mind it moved  :)

"It wasn't cheap but insurance was covered."
How much was it?

"I would double-check the fine print on your Visa for the insurance coverage."
IIRC 3 months was the max.

Its a dilemma between buying a "new" used car and keeping it for a few years or renting, which I understand maybe more expensive but with no repair bills and it can be all written off at the end of year (I am self employed)

Then go to a leasing company and rent one of their cars for the length of time you want and have them include insurance. In fact any car dealer can also do that.

These would be new new cars. If you want used cars that are already on lease go to Leasebusters and pick the one you like and some of them, if from a car finance co. might have the ability to build in insurance.

It would likely to be cheaper to get your own insurance though.

Yes go to http://www.leasebusters.com/en/galleryscriptlease.asp
they have a good selection of 1-6 month lease take overs which will be big time
cheaper then renting on a monthly bases from car rental companies.

Car rental agencies such as Hertz, Budget etc do not give much of a discount on
monthly rental rates.

A lease take over will save you at least half the cost.

I just rented a 300 Touring for $245/week.  My insurance was covered, I have it on my CC and vehicle policy.

So the price for a month would be $980/mo.

The cheapest you could get a car for would probably be about $20/day so $560/mo

Which is pretty cheap considering a basic Versa or Corolla would probably run you close to $300/mo inc. taxes on a 48 month lease + insurance.

Question about these short term lease takovers.

What if there's something the leasing company finds that needs to be repaired or fixed, the person who takes over say a 3 or 4 month lease will be responsible for it, right?

You get those things fixed by the original leasor before signing on the your short term.

If these things cannot or will not fixed before you take over the lease then keep looking.

@ Eax, who are you renting your vehicles through?

$1,000 a month for a car rental is not very economical, especially when its out of your personal account, and not corporate.
