If the diesel engine is for saving fuel in a truck, a 4.5L V8 is rather "large" for this purpose.

If it gets better mileage when load compared to the 6.2L gasser then it a good thing

Chevy 1500 payload crewcab 4x4 with trailing package 2150lbs, standard package 1750
Ram 1500  ecodiesel payload crewcab 4x4 1320 lbs

It'll be better on fuel than a gasser (though entry costs probably don't outweigh that anyway) and it'll actually pull something.  I doubt that Ecodiesel in the RAM could pull my camper to BC and back very easily.  That little 2.7l F150 out pulls it.  If I buy a truck for gas mileage, why didn't I just buy a Corolla instead?  Not that I wouldn't mind better, but I still want a truck to do what a truck is supposed to do; pull.
Hate to write this but a Ecodiesel 3.92  rear end will out pull the 2.7 3.72 rear end by 100 lbs

A Corolla would have a hard time carrying 1200 lbs of equipment

I am not looking for a truck that can tow but one that can carry a payload

That link is over a year old.
The 4.5L diesel was actually shown at SEMA in 2007, then shelved not long afterwards. It might happen, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

If the 2.8 takes off , I think 4.5 will get dusted off

If you wanna seriously haul a trailer, do it right and get a Duramax or Powerstroke and a 3/4 or 1 ton truck, this whole 1/2 ton diesel thing to me is pointless. Price for a truck like I would want equipped would take it into 3/4 or 1 ton gas territory and I would much rather have the huge capability of an HD truck rather than a 1/2 ton, compared to a gas 1/2 ton, the fuel savings would never be made up by the extra cost of buying and maintaining the diesel. Fuel mileage....well....I honestly don't really care that much. A diesel 1 ton dually Ford or GM....yes please, a diesel 1/2 ton Dodge/Nissan/Ferd.....wouldn't be on my radar.
Lighten up Francis.....

If you are hauling 1600 lbs, and driving 40,000 km a year , you do not need a 3/4 ton truck for that
Ecodiesel is only $4600 more then a Hemi, it would only take about 2 years to make up the difference in price

We still waiting for Auto.ca investigation report on the difference between maintenance on a gas and diesel engine  ;D

I am planning my next DD purchase. After owning a 2004 2500 GMC for 5+ years, I don't want to be without a truck now; the 6.0L in my truck is rather thirsty, it is not used for long travelling very often. Now have better interests for the new and upcoming trucks.

Still think a 4.8L diesel in over kill for a 1/4 ton p/u, something is the line 3.0L V6 Dodge unit is a better match.
