2005 Hyundai Elantra rusted - repair or replace?
« on: March 24, 2015, 10:25:03 am »
Hi folks

Have a 2005 Hyundai Elantra with a major rust hole over the rear driver side fender / wheel well plus rust forming on the front driver side fender.  Otherwise in ok shape, but the rust is spreading quickly and has surpassed my DIY capability (ie would need to cut and weld and/or replace panel(s)).

Car has only 140000 kms, but is a manual that has been getting annoying in stop and go traffic - this is my commuter vehicle.

So the problem is, do I repair (assuming at least $2000 to get it up to snuff) or replace with a used automatic with better mileage (this is not the greatest for a small car @ around 10L/100km)

Opinions?

Should I be posting this in the buying forum instead/as well?

1)  Drive it until the body disintegrates...this would be the cheapest option

2)  If you really want to replace it, what kind of budget did you have in mind?  I'm going to assume that the Elantra will have minimum trade-in value considering its mileage and condition...maybe $1000?

#1....the car with the corrosion you describe is worth maybe $500 trade in if the dealer is really desperate. Whats your budget for a new ride?? If you do not spend enough, you will just end up getting someone elses headache.
Lighten up Francis.....

Investing $2000 would be a mistake.

- $2000 more than car is worth.
- If something mechanical goes wrong after that investment your committed to continuing to spend more money.
- The manual is annoying you.
- Rust will exist in more than just body panels. If your car has not been looked after you underbody, brake lines, fuel lines, cables and everything else are probably in bad shape.

I fail to understand why people will spend thousands to buy a car and keep it on the road yet not spend $100 every year to have it sprayed to protect it from rust. Or just do the spray every 2nd year as I do. You would not be faced with this problem had this been done.

Had you done the spray from new it would have cost you just over $1000 over the 10 years. You would be driving a car that still looks great and would have a higher resale value. It is a no-brainer.

I am sorry but I just do not get it.

Get rid of it before something structural starts to rust and weaken.

Wasn't there a massive recall program for MY2001-2005 Hyundai cars due to rust?

It could be that you may be able to get something from Hyundai to cover any repair costs if your car was under the recall umbrella....

might as well try....

but i'm in the ditch it camp... and yeah, 500 is *all* you are going to get trade in, because who is going to try and spend the money needed to retail the car? they are stretching at 500, because they are really going to get scrap money. some dealers might just tell you to donate it and give you nothing...

if it drives alright, you might get 500 on kijiji as is from someone doing derby...

the car will not get better... it will continue to deteriorate.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

If the car is safetyable without much work (i.e. tires, brakes, etc. are fine) then you may be able to list it online and get a $1000.  Just say  that it runs fine.  There's a market for people looking for cheap reliable transportation who don't give a crap about rust.

How is it mechanically?  Is the rust cosmetic or does it impact the integrity of the car?  (Suspension mounts, etc?)

DO NOT REPAIR THE RUST - you'd be better off taking half that amount of money and setting it on fire.

I'm pretty sure his car is not covered for THAT rust - it's the suspension failure that's covered, and I think it was just the 2001-2003 Elantras.

I say drive it into the ground or trade it in and get whatever you can for it.

If you trade a car like that - you get $0.00.  Seriously.  They'll put $500 or $1000 on the sheet and then not reduce the price of the new car - meaning they just take it off your hands for nothing.

yep. I will usually put 250 real money in it, but i'm not most... "showing" 500 is easy to do on most cars even if they put nothing in it.

The best solution, if it's mechanicly good drive it while it can. Then buy other one. Invest $2000 in repair, I think it's not so smart. For that money you can buy decent another car, or add little more money and buy something better.
