LOL ^^^

Overheard at a stealership today:
Sir, my technician pointed out that the cabin filter is clogged and dirty and he recommends replacing it (shows customer a fairly clean but apparently carbon filter)
Customer: uhm, what was the last time I changed it?
Service: Let's see... it was in April. (realizing the ridiculousness of the proposal): I can postpone it until the next service.
Customer: how much would it be?
Service: 95 dollars
Customer: ??
Service: The technician will have to take apart half the dashboard.
Customer: OK, let's do it now.

Half the dashboard. FFS!

.....ii would have to assume that is just a standard upsell sales pitch.   if they have to take half the dash apart for filter change/inspection, they obviously haven't taken it apart and actually looked...

i change my cabin filter every 2~3 years...

Yup.  My coworker with his 2008 MDX was just taken by the stealership for a replacement HID. $367.  Apparently, they have to remove the bumper.  I looked online and that is the factory recommended method.  However, it can be replaced without removing it.  Just takes some talented contortions and spider monkey fingers (as I have been named from my friends as I have a unique ability to take stuff apart in tight spaces).

The filter is behind the glovebox and its replacement is a DIY explained in the owner's manual.  :-X

IMO an upsell is when something valuable to the customer is added to the bill. There is no benefit in replacing a 3 month old filter. It's a lawful robbery I think.

Lol.  Exactly.  Everytime we're working on a 300ZX, spider monkey fingers is called in on the difficult tasks.

Dealer charged wifes friend well over $100 of labour to swap out her cabin filter on the 2012 or 2013 Grand Cherokee.....I could do it in less than 5 minutes without one tool. Snap glovebox off, take off cover plate (which the dealer monkeys had broken a tab off previously), replace filter, reverse process, bask in glory while drinking beer  ;D

god... that sucks!

air filters are one pretty easy upsell... cabin ones, we hardly ever check em unless their is a complaint or it is just due according to time.

at least they literally show it to you when they try to make you buy it... but still, so many of those filters could just have a pass by the air gun and be nearly as good as new.

Some of those filters trap allergens.  You don't want to be blowing them out with an air gun necessarily.

I had bought a replacement cabin air filter to put in one weekend, took the car in for an oil change.  The guy showed me the dirty cabin air filter, suggested it be changed.  I know, I said, there's one on the back seat that I'm going to put in on the weekend.

He said they'd put it in for me, made no difference to them, they'd either put the old one back in, or put in the new one.

I have my moments!!   ;D

You can even buy HEPA, Carbon ones, etc.  And just cut what you need.  I once made a DIY somewhere on the web.  Can't find it now though... ???

Do any dealers show the customers an old, dirty filter that may not have come from the customer's car to force him/her to pay for these 'services'?  I can see a shady dealer doing that to unsuspecting female customers.

i know that some do thanks to some of those dateline type shows... if they did that in my shop, i would either not be working there anymore or getting someone turfed... that is beyond shady and just illegal.

I wonder how we all survived for all those years before cars had cabin air filters? ::)
