Is it just me or do those wheels make it look like the car is equipped with winter steelies at first glance? The first time I drove by the dealer here and saw several Crosstrek's parked along the road I wondered why they all had steel wheels and no hub caps.

$1700 Freight? Thats getting into luxury car territory!

I'll wait to hear what James has to say but I have to wonder if a 148hp 2.0+AWD+CVT doesn't equal "needs better power." I wonder if the push for FE isn't going to usher in a period similar to the early 70's after the introduction of emissions controls where  power and performance fell off sharply? Several manufacturers seem to be going backwards lately when it comes to power. (Mazda Sky-active comes to mind)

$1700 Freight  ??? About $1000 more than US Dealers  >:(

Dealers have figured out that when we play hard ball on invoice pricing they mostly get away with standing their ground on Freight, preparation fees.

The one thing that bowled me over when I got my new 2012 Caravan was that there was no freight charges. If you think it was baked into a high MSRP, think again it was $17995 with freight.

As long as Canadians remain apathetic to being raped on Freight and high MSRPs dealers will gladly take it.

yet again.... DEALERS do not make a penny on freight. and the van you got was a part of a "save the freight" event... chrysler gets a few of those every year... last year was the van and the sebring where dealership employees went to the factory and picked up the car during a training/launch event.

if you get lucky and find one of those on a lot, scoop it up because that no freight is not something tranferrable and is on top of any other rebates/discounts.

as for this subaru, i like the looks of it, but the engine/cvt combo i can't imagine is going to be powerful enough. even with a stick i feel like its a bit underwhelming on paper.. i'll be looking forward to the future reviews.

It probably will feel underpowered.  However, the Japanese are very careful with trying new technology.  Hence, they develop one engine, see what the real world data is, then develop the next.  Mazda is coming out with the larger 2.5L Skyactiv-G which should solve power problems in the CX-5.  However, the 2.0 is probably enough in the Mazda 3.  If they bring the 2.2 Diesel, that would be my choice.

I like the look in black!  All the ones I've seen are the orange.  The 2.0 w/ 148hp may be adequate (barely) in the Impreza, but I think they should have put the bigger 2.5 from the Forester and Legacy into the XV.

Looking forward to your impressions James.

Does anyone know how much more cargo space this thing has compared to the Impreza?

Too bad it's not the manual, but glad it's the base Touring model. I agree with those that feel $1695 'freight' is absurd. Didn't it used to be called, 'delivery and dealer prep'? Anyway, $900-1000 more than the US pays is ridiculous. The base price for the Crosstrek in Canada is already $2500 more than in the US (where it's $21,995), add the 'freight' and it's about $3500 extra. Subaru Canada isn't as bad as it once was, but has a long way to go yet.

But the original impreza outback sport was still an impreza, just like this Crosstrek.

Hmmm...the Crosstrek is actually slightly smaller

Impreza 5 door : 638L seats up, 1485L seats down
Crosstrek:  632L seats up, 1470L seats down

Maybe there's a slightly different shape to the 2 of them?  Near as makes no difference tho...

Here's my own personal run-down on the XV Crosstrek after 2,500+ kms of ownership.

The specs:
2013 XV Crosstrek Sport, 5spd - purchased September 14th.

Background:
We live in the Vancouver area, but picked up the XV in Calgary (Centaur Subaru) through a family friend that works for Subaru there (good guys - highly recommend the dealership).

Rationale for buying in the first place:
Only vehicle available with a combination of fuel-efficient engine, AWD, manual transmission, and high ground clearance.

Impression so far:
In one word - 'mixed'

Pros
1) Fuel economy - after initial break-in (trip back from Calgary) fuel economy has been better than expected delivering a consistent 8.9 to 9.2 L/100km in town and 6.9 to 7.2 L/100km on the highway.

2) Content for the price - see my rationale above, but really the XV is hard to beat as there really is no competition (Juke maybe, but it slurps back premium fuel, has much less cargo space, and you have to take the CVT if you want all the extra goodies)

3) Seat/driving position - very comfy seats - never got sore on the trip back from Calgary, plus the heated seats are pretty nice.  Adjustable armrest is handy on long trips and there's a nice meaty feel to the leather-wrapped steering wheel.

4) Hill-start assist - handy feature with the manual especially with the hills around Greater Vancouver.  Didn't expect it would be important to me but now I find I miss it when driving my other car.  Just lets you pull away in a more relaxed manner.

5) Cargo/storage - plenty of cargo room with lots of cup holders, bag clips, integrated USB/AUX in the centre console, etc.

6) Fuel econ display - fun to play with, but I'm sure I'll get bored of it eventually.

Cons
1) vibration from the switch panel for the moonroof - drives me nuts

2) vibration from under the hood when decelerating, especially at higher engine speeds above 2500 rpm (sounds like loose plastic parts shaking around under the hood)

3) overall noise - the cabin is not a very quiet place to be.  Find myself cranking up the music on the highway to really loud levels just to drown out the wind/engine/tire noise. Also it emits some high-pitched whistle noise around 100 kph.

4) Hill-start assist - error messages and warning lights mysteriously show up multiple times on the display then disappear later (Hill start assists stops working while the warning light is on) - will take it to the dealer to address shortly.

5) Under-powered - just about drove it back to the dealer when I picked it up, but later found the engine loosened up and had considerably more power after ~1000kms break-in.  Still underwhelming though and not that fun to rev it up high (generally seems pointless above 4500 rpm and takes an eternity to get there even in lower gears)

6) Unrefined engine sound - not anywhere near as satisfying or well balanced as my '08 Mazda 5 2.3

7) Manual transmission - desperately needs a 6th cog as it spins ~2,900 rpm at 100km/h, plus the action is a bit rubbery and notchy even compared to my old 2003 Impreza.

Verdict:
I'll try to get my local dealer to address some of the NVH and Hill Start Assist issues soon, but generally the XV lacks refinement of other similar vehicles in this price range.  Yet it still manages to check those boxes I need in a vehicle (manual/AWD/fuel efficient/high ground clearance).  In other words I'm still waiting for somebody to build this car, only better....
