Nice article and I really hope to get out to that side of the country one day.

One small technical point (the electrical engineer inside of me is now going to come out).  USB cannot be "high voltage" ever.  The specification for USB is 5 volt.  However, you can get chargers/ports that deliver "high current" (2.1+ Amps).  The other thing is you need to make sure you are using a good quality charging cable to be able to use the full current output as the wires are thicker to support the higher flow of current.  Otherwise, the charging current will be limited.  Typically, the charging wires should be 24AWG or larger (smaller the number, the larger the wire size - 24>28) to support faster charging.  The data wires are usually 28, which is fine.

I enjoyed this article. It was a good balance between talking about the car and describing the trip. It's always interesting to see how vehicles perform in real world situations.

One comment....It would be better if the photos accompanying the article were captioned.

If Jacob can get in touch with the author if this article, tell her that there is a helicopter pad at the end of that road in Pouch Cove.  It is perched at the edge of the rocky headland and offers a great view out over the north Atlantic.  It is a great spot - you feel like you've reached the end of the world.  Oh, I made it there in the summer of 1997 or 1998 in my Dad's '88 Corolla. 😺

One great trip they missed was a whale/puffin watching tour out of Bay Bulls, about 40 minutes south of St. John's.  I've taken this tour a number of times and it's always memorable.  The last time I took it was this past summer with my parents and my sister's family.  My nieces loved it - we saw a number of humpback whales, some dolphins and as my Dad would say, the sky was maggoty with puffins.

It is too bad that they didn't have the time to visit L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site - the location of the only documented Viking settlement in North America.

I could go on and on about a number of other great sites they could have visited.  If anyone is ever planning a trip to  Newfoundland, don't hesitate to ask me.

PS - There is a short ferry ride to Labrador from the great northern peninsula which makes a great little side trip.

interesting article, we too hope to make a similar journey next year entering by ferry at one end of the island off at the other with plans to speed two weeks in Newfoundland - one province we have never visited before.

Just compiling attractions and routes on my Garmin BaseCamp program at present in preparation.

I think he'll be able to track her down.

I'm really liking the new X1.  It certainly doesn't have that low-rent, plasticky look of the previous generation.

I'm a bit shocked at the price though; $56K puts it right at the same level as a fully loaded Q5 3.0 Technik w/ S-Line package.  Yikes!

I too enjoyed the read. It has been many years since I've visited the Atlantic provinces and I've never been as far as Newfoundland but i do remember it being very scenic and extremely pretty. Would like to visit someday, as well as St-Pierre-et Miquelon. If I only had time....

Not so pleased about the car in question, just another blob crossover.

Great article, fantastic to read!!! The car, meh, $56k for something the size of a Patriot and a turbo BMW motor, yeah, no thanks.
Lighten up Francis.....
