Very similar to a van, people borrowing my van quite often.  I don't care.  Usually has more gas, and is cleaner, when I get it back!

If someone asked to borrow my truck the answer would be an emphatic "go fk yourself." (OK, I wish, but it'd be "no" just the same.)  Been there done that...people don't treat your stuff like it's your stuff, they treat it like a rental. Go buy your own damn truck.

Meh, I'm happy letting friends borrow our truck.  That's one favour in the bank!

But then again, our truck is used for, you know, actual truckly duties!  So if a buddy wants to borrow it to move some furniture, or head to the landfill, or pick up some gravel - that's what it's meant for.  If it was a 60K cowboy cadillac with a pristine interior, maybe I'd have a different opinion.

Thats why I resist the idea of getting a Cowboy Cadillac.....I like using the truck for what its for, dents, scratches, whatever.

:iagree:    I don't lend my things (van, tools, etc.) to strangers.  Only to my friends, and thats what friends are for.  I borrow their stuff all the time.

I would always let people use my truck.  Most of the time I would come with them and help them do what they needed doing.  This accomplished a few things:

1) I could keep an eye on my truck
2) I could spend time with a friend
3) I could earn brownie points with a friend to store until a time when I need their help

If you were to buy a truck for using like a truck, how old and what format?  3-5yr old, single cab long bed?

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

Honestly, I really like the crew cab format, its the best way to haul people and stuff. Age wise....uhhh...Im really a fan of the old man specials. We have a lot of snowbirds in this area and they have a truck that is used to pull a trailer or boat down to warmer climes once or twice a year so the truck might be older, but it has really low mileage. Something 6-8 years old is what I would look for. Dodge, I do not like, if you are going for gas, either Ford or GM are really solid vehicles. Diesel, GM is a good choice, Dodge has a great Cummins engine but the rest of the growth that is called the Dodge truck around it is horrid. Crew cab, 4x4, 6.5 foot box, 3/4 ton and up....thats about it.

That is a MASSIVE truck.

I am a fan of the extended cab and 6.5 foot bed.  I like having the length for hauling lumber and people can sit in the back if needed (or kids as long as you need them to) and it isn't too onerous in a parking lot.

IMO, if it isn't your primary family vehicle the 5.5 bed is too limiting for regular truck use.

I will also lend my truck out to friends with no reservations.  In fact, if I don't have to go then I am guaranteed to not be lifting things.

Massive...you haven't driven a crew cab dually....you almost need pilot boats for that....I agree, the 5.5 foot box is very useless.

When you are actually towing something, its absolutely amazing, only way to go....wouldn't want to have to park it in a downtown parkade every day.....

I agree, ext cab with 6.5 box is the best compromise (now that my kids are grown).

Don't so much agree with lending out my truck though. :)

Mine is an '01 with 280k km.  I have a policy that it comes back with more gas than it left with.  And I only let friends use it.

It takes to long to empty my truck for someone else to use it
