   It's a posh 89 Isusu Trooper. Vast difference in price though; the Trooper was under $20G. Oh I am sure that this has all of the trimmings and it's Mercedes and does not have to stop to engage, and otherwise...4WD. Great in the aspects of this kind of vehicle. But...you see...the old Trooper was Wonderful and it did not matter about having to stop to engage 4WD. You only needed to do so in orrible stuff...twice in my 10 year ownership...the rest of the time RWD.

   I suppose...if you have the money...and envision bad winters, but the Trooper was tons of fun and reliable to the end...rust...and you could actually own one.

I would like to see a test to destruction  between this, a Range Rover and a 20+ year old Toyota Land Cruiser.  A real one, the sort that was sold in Africa...the one that could be fixed by a blacksmith.

I absolutely love this rig.  That said, I don't think I could live with one for daily driver use.  But I get it.  And so does my wife who also loves the G-wagen.

It's too bad one of the mainstream manufacturers didn't make this vehicle without the bling. A real off-roader in a proper boxy shape and stout drive-line. As it sits, it's a caricature of what an off-roader should be.

Just saw a parked G55 when I went out for dinner yesterday. I see a lot of these in North York, none of them have spec of mud/dirt on them.

I understand the love for it, but it's not my cup of tea.  It'd be cool to have one if I had at least two other cars in the garage for regular use.

Great article, very well written. Whenever I see one of these being driven by a purse dog, Kardashian wannabe, I cringe, I have a longstanding love of these and all of this AMG/speed racer idiocy baffles me. This is an absolute offroad monster, 3 locking diffs, a proper transfer case, good ground clearance, proper body on frame construction and solid axles front and rear.....I would love to have a bare bones, 4 door, 7 passenger, diesel, G300. If you want an AMG, buy a proper fire breathing sedan or coupe, this is like putting a Hellcat motor in a Wrangler and calling a "sport SUV", it wouldn't be, but POWAAAAAA!!!
