@jyarkony, I downloaded one called Sound Meter Lite for my Galaxy (Android).  I was at my son's swimming lesson one night and I noticed how loud it was in the pool area, so I downloaded it to try it.  Over 90 decibels in there!!!  :o

Agree with the others, great job. You covered all the pertinent points, and doing it back to back I'm sure helps make comparisons rather than remembering what something felt like months ago, in some other situation.

I don't miss the statistics too much, though braking distances can be helpful sometimes you can read too much into a 1.5 mph victory in a 60 mph slalom. I enjoyed hearing about your experiences just driving them and how they feel on the road.

Look forward to more!

I knew you'd notice that.   ;D  Recognize it?

There's also a Marmot 4C sleeping bag and a Marmot Hideaway 4P tent, along with Salomon hikers and a bigass Coleman cooler on wheels.   ;D

Great article Mike, well done!  I too would love to see more comparos like this.
Ditto, good read!
It's a shame Nissan has hobbled its quality vehicles with CVT's. That's why we're still driving the good ol' XTrail.
I look forward to a ROUND 2 with the Escape, Forester, Sportage, Tiguan, and a CX5 with new shoes. Too bad we have to wait a year to see any diesels in this catagory.

Oh!  And a queen-sized inflatable Coleman mattress.  My boots are sitting on top of it in the Tucson shot.  I really thought the gear might make for a good visual comparo as well.  Glad that worked!

The Mini Cooper Countryman should have been tested too...I feel the list was not complete, but the write up was quite good.

No wonder you needed more room for your gear. If you buy anymore, you might be upgrading to a Suburban :P

great review...i love these types of reviews, and really enjoyed each individual review...unlike the small car review from MT(?) where they compared small cars and made them like a dinner menu, so you never really knew why the cars were ranked top to bottom.

  • Enjoy reading this comparo, looking forward another one for different category
  • Too bad Forester and Escape were not in this comparison
    • Escape-always amaze how a really old design (Pre-2013 Escape) can keep on top of SUV sales chart every year
    • Forester-the best in class visibility and ease on installing car seat; it should win many young family mother heart
  • Since CRV is a touring trim, may be why you have a higher marks for its interior? I was disappointed the interior of the CRV when I was sitting in a lower trim model in Toronto Car Show
  • As someone has mentioned, Tiguan should also be on the list.
  • Rogue is really bad, IMO. The interior just lack the utility and functionality of what a SUV should have.

Flattery will get you everywhere.  :)  But please don't let it get out that I occasionally smile.  ;)

Big props to Mike and John on the article.  I've been eager to see how they would handle what had to be a daunting task, and they absolutely nailed it.  Each vehicle was given thoughtful review, both singularly and in a comparative context, with the collective views of various testers seamlessly blended in.  Hats off gents.

And a big thanks for being included in the test crew.  A really unique and memorable experience, to say the least.  Having read more comparison tests than I can recall, I now have a much better appreciation for the work that goes into executing one.  We weren't spinning about a parking lot here, folks.  We had a long, comprehensive route, with major highways, city streets, secondary highways and twisty backroads all in the mix.  Each driver had a long turn behind the wheel of each test vehicle, and a raft of comprehensive scoresheets to keep track of.  It was a lot of work, and a huge blast.

Extra bonus meeting our own resident forum hottie - Brigitte.

I'll add some of my thoughts on the vehicles in a bit.  There really is no equivalent to an opportunity like this to see how segment competitors stack up. And I'd say that something surprised me about each car relative to my preconceptions and expectations - some good, some not.  As to the CR-V claiming top spot on all scoresheets, I'm both surprised and unsurpirsed by that.   The Mazda was very well liked - I thought it might have grabbed top spot on at least one card.  But Honda really put it together with this new entry.

Great article Mike, well done!  I too would love to see more comparos like this.

Mike and Jon are working hard at organizing more comparos. There's at least one more in the works that I know of.

A manual-only rematch might be interesting for us car forum groupies.

Of the 5 tested, only the fwd CX-5 GX and a basic, decontented 2.0 Tucson are available with sticks.  Looking around adds the Tiguan, Sportage (with the 2.4), not-so-small RVR, smaller-than-you-think Juke ... and the Calibresque Jeeps.

Forester can be had with a manual.
