No question ZF is a master tranny developer. But it's much more interesting what real life gas mileage and emissions improvement will be. For example, there is no better fuel economy in Chrysler's Avenger when compare four and newer six speed transmissions! Just one more complicated unit which by presumption is less reliable. And reliability traditionaly isn't the best side of Chrysler/Fiat products.

Wow, with all the torque available with a 3.6L it has to be the fuel economy game. My 3.5 V6 has an all time best on a tank of fuel at 7 L per 100 km and that with a 4 speed transmission

"...The 845RE transmission will be standard equipment on all V6-powered 2012 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger models with the exception of the entry-level Chrysler 300 Touring and Dodge Charger SE models, for which it will be optionally available."

Unfortunately, there is still going to be a "fleet special" with the old (very) 4 speed auto. :-\

The new 845RE transmission is manufactured by German transmission specialist ZF and is similar to eight-speed transmissions developed by ZF for a variety of Audi, BMW, Bentley, Range Rover and Rolls Royce models.

Buy a Chrysler and get a Rolls Royce transmission? Not unless you're fresh off the turnip truck.

Chrysler's reputation precedes it. I wouldn't want to be the first on my block to buy a Mopar 8-speed automatic transmission, even if it's made by ZF. The Jatco CVT installed in some Chrysler models was reportedly much less reliable than Nissan versions. One suspects vigorous, targeted cost and corner cutting.
