Day-by-Day Review: 2012 Toyota Prius C; Day 1

James won't have an exciting week in the Toyota Prius C, but it will likely be an inexpensive one.

I'm interested to hear about this fun-to-drive handling that Toyota is touting for their new 'fun' hybrid. Is it just marketing or does it feel any better to drive than the standard Prius?

If it were me heading to a Toyota dealer, I think I'd be more inclined to save a pile of money and buy a Yaris SE 5 door instead.  I was behind one the other day, I think a Yaris looks bigger too.

I was surprised by this but a Yaris SE 5-door (with auto) is only $1,243 cheaper than a Prius C. If you factor in that a driver who covers approx. 32,000 Kms/year (commuter) would save about $700/year on fuel, the Prius C driver would be at about an $800 advantage over a 3-year term.
I personally would probably also choose a Yaris SE 5-door as it would be more engaging to drive, but the little C has its place...one of which is using very little gas!

I actually get this car...entry-level hybrid. I would think plenty of urbanites out there want a small car and would also like to make a statement about their green-ness.

The three most common vehicles I've seen in Montana in the last few days are Subarus of all shapes and sizes, massively lifted full sized pickups and various Prius models.

That’s not the only place the dollar signs are rolling, though; this tester comes in at a cool $27,000 after freight—seems a little on the pricey side for what is essentially a Toyota Yaris that has been electrified. Maybe I’ll never “get” this hybrid thing.

That's coming soon too I'd bet not NA. It would be interesting to compare them side by side. I think after a week you might change ya mine. Plus The C looks a lot more hip and trendy in more exiting colors that would appeal to young urbanites. You don't even have to spend that large.

For about 27 k$, you can look green in the miserable Prius C, while thinking you are having fun...

... or if you really want to have fun and make your neighbors green with envy, you can spend the same money on this other product from Toyota:

Thanks for the note on 'handling' today  ;)

I realize it will never be a performer, but I was curious to see how Toyota's marketing of the 'fun to drive' hybrid actually stacked up in reality. Like anyone else I can see the enjoyment of powerful luxury cars but I also find it fun to toss around small city cars because they are so light, agile and forgiving.

I suppose the lack of interior quality is to be expected in eco models, but that disgusting color scheme is very disappointing. The bad turning circle and floor mounted stick also take away from what I'd figured may have been a sweet deal of a hybrid.

I really like eco friendly cars, if James is right, Toyota just missed the mark with this one. I'd probably just have a yaris.

I think the Prius C is a great little car but the upper models are, in my opinion, a little pricey for my tastes. The base model at $20k is a great deal if you need a very efficient city car.
I'd never join a group that would have me as a member.

Since I own a Prius C, I have a few corrections and additions to make to your review so far. First, the Prius C has the smallest turning circle of any subcompact (a distinction it shares with the Yaris) when equipped with the standard 15" wheels. The optional 16" wheels on your test vehicle increase the turning radius 20%. Second, I would be very surprised if the 16" tires on your car are low rolling resistance (LRR) because the standard 15" tires (Bridgestone Turanza EL400) are not. Most Prius C owners will replace the Turanzas with LRR tires when they wear out to improve mpg 5-10%. Third, if you find the car noisier than a Miata, you are trying to drive it like a Miata. I drive my car mostly in the city (Ottawa), where I am able to operate on the electric motor alone (i.e. gas engine shut off) more than 50% of the time, which gives me city fuel consumption of 3.5l/100km (81 mpg) or better routinely. Provided the car is not driven with a lead foot, the engine is so quiet it is very difficult to tell when it is running without looking at the dash display. I have noticed that the fuel consumption figures obtained by owners (many of whom are recording their mpg on fuelly.com) are typically get much higher than those obtained by most car reviewers, which I suspect is because the latter tend to have two driving styles, fast and faster.

Great post curriet!

I'd love to see the autos.ca hypermiling champ reviewer spend a few weeks behind the wheel to determine what is possible.

Most auto reviewers drive an economy car the way they drive a high performance sedan.  The buyers of fuel efficient cars bought them for a reason and drive them according to their strengths - a whole different mindset.

And yes, please dump the "upgraded" model for a growing list of reasons.

Cheers,
John M.

Actually I'd like to point out that I drove the Prius C VERY gingerly to no avail this week.  Considering most of my commute is highway it never ran on battery power.

Also I never mentioned a Miata.... so not sure what that is about?

In you post you sound very disappointed to average "only" 4.8L/100 km.  Have you had another car that has done better for a week in your long term tests??

I believe I have.  I was even able to do a low 5 in a Yaris.

I suppose one has to remember that as a percentage the numbers are considerable different then as an absolute.

But for a small hybrid I expected better than a larger hybrid and it wasn't so.   I was impressed by 4.2 but 4.8 not so much,  ask was hoping to keep the 4.2 I guess.

4.8 is ~49 US MPG.  Few, cars will better that.  And FWIW, that's almost exactly the combined economy the EPA gives the car.
