Windshield Replacement - Big Range in Cost?
« on: May 19, 2015, 12:02:26 pm »
So yeah, the TSX has a 4-5 inch long crack originating from the side of my windshield.  :'( I called a few places, and there seems to be a very wide range in pricing ($200-$450), the highest being the chain Speedy Auto Glass.

The car is 11 years old and has 243 km on it. I do not want to spend $450++ on a new windshield, but $200 seems to be "too cheap"  ???

I dont know man, I would say anything under $300 is acceptable. $450 for a regular windshield seems a little out of line.

In Alberta, we have to replace windscreens constantly.  It's my experience that the install job is 1000x more important than the glass.  In fact, I've found the cheaper glass seems to actually hold up better.

I paid a little over $200 for the heated glass for the Forester installed and it's held up better than the OE.  I deal with a small indie shop that does a careful install job - no leaks, air noise, etc.

You sure about the deductible?   Usually the windshield isn't included in that

You in Ottawa?  I know that Apple Auto Glass on Gladstone was well regarded.

Typically, COMPREHENSIVE coverage such as windshields in Ontario start at $300 deductible.   TSX MAN may have $500.  Regardless, if you are within a 100 bucks best not to make a claim.

I'd just let it go.  :)

I had it on one of my cars. The crack was caused by rust bubbling underneath. Make sure they do a new gasket or seal and clean out any rust if found. Cheap quotes are likely not to include that important "extra"

Long live public insurance! In Manitoba we have the option of zero deductible on glass.

Also, I've heard a few times that some autoglass stores have one price (set by the insurer) and a much lower price for consumers buying direct. Around $200 for a pickup windscreen is what i recall a pal paying.

We have a forum member with better knowledge than mine about our public insurer.

The other option is to get it repaired.  I've had it done with good results, but get it before it spreads.

Chip repairs are free as per my insurance, but as Steve says, an entire windshield replacement has a deductible on it.

Funny, I had an appointment at Speedy for Wednesday to get a chip fixed (one at a different spot). Got that cancelled, and I'm going with a shop called "GlassDoctor" in London for ~$290 taxes in, and includes new seals/mouldings. The one guy doing it for $200 seemed kinda sketchy.

I have a zero deductible glass package that cost me $50 extra a year on top of my insurance. I always had this as where I live they put rocks on the hwy in the winter and this is an early thing for me and is worth every penny. just had mine replace and did not have to pay a cent.

That's about what my SIL paid for a new windshield for his F150, at Crystal Glass in Kamloops a few weeks ago. The cheapest quote he got in Alberta before their move to BC was $600!  :o
